Whatizzit?

#1 Post by robert moglia »

Found this in one of the many boxes my car came in.
Doesn’t look like a 356 part but I defer to the group.
Screwdriver for size reference.
Keep it or toss it?

Early spacer for the early fuel pump, probably Bakelite. It was changed to an aluminum one because this one tended to crack.

It is cracked, are they still available?

Used ones are probably available. Check on the Samba or eBay or maybe one of our members has one they can part with.

Update: none on the Samba; one on eBay but it too is cracked. I think most have gone with the aluminum one.

Beyond originals, there are no repros of either the fiber or the alum version. Is something needed there?

It seems that the aluminum ones are readily available but the Bakelite or whatever they are made of) are less plentiful. The one on eBay is cracked. Another part Porsche changed because of issues. Maybe a repro made to look like the original but made with a modern durable material would be desired?

There are plenty around - I've got a bunch and they never sell.

I don't understand that. If UN-CRACKED, very desirable for a correct late 1954 to 1958 engine.
I don't do engines anymore, but would be interested to buy some for the occasional request.
Let me know.

Whatizzit?

If the Bakelite is not cracked or damaged by oil and grease, the spacer is often warped. Took a while to find a good one for 551xx.

There is no spacer with that one.

Sorry Vic, I used ‘spacer’ as the incorrect description of the above part. ‘Intermediate flange’ is correct. The later aluminum intermediate flange and insulating spacer is a definite improvement.
