Re: Disaster Averted or Not?
The groove in the bolt is for the top spring to hold the spring in place ...and is there...so you dont forget to put it back on after a oil change....T

Thanks Tony. Does anyone have a picture of the spring so I know what to look for, or maybe dimensions?tony apcar wrote: ↑Sat Jun 03, 2023 11:02 pm The groove in the bolt is for the top spring to hold the spring in place ...and is there...so you dont forget to put it back on after a oil change....T

The Spring stays attached to the cover plate.

Re: Disaster Averted or Not?
I don’t think the spring serves any function. Don’t bother getting one. Springs were part of the original design, which had a perch, a thick rubber gasket, the filter, another thick rubber gasket, a spring to hold the rubber gaskets tight against the filter (this was the seal), and the top gasket and copper ring under the head of the bolt.
When the filter was redesigned, the seal became part of the filter itself, so the spring serves no function. The filter will stay in place without it.

Thanks everyone for your assistance in what I thought was a monumental problem. Yesterday I thought I would getting my car towed on Monday and here we are a day later and all is sorted, all thanks to the assistance provided by this group. Oil has been changed, new sump plate, gaskets, filter, washers and oil. Took it for two drives, One short just to confirm no leaks and one long to again confirm no leaks. Engine has been cleaned up quite a bit but still needs some attention.
