Exhaust variation question

#1 Post by Ignacio Vivancos »

Hi! I'll like to know if someone might have a factory/period picture of a late summer 53 to the introduction of the 3 piece engines. I'm trying to find out what exhaust was used on late 2 piece engines. At around August 53 the cars were modified
on the rear valance with a small indentation due to insufficient muffler pipe clearance. In Parts manual supplement March 53 the exhaust used is 527.54.101 (2 pipes flat style). Was this exhaust used until the introduction of the round pipe style
546.54.106/539.54.101 or were those exhausts adopted with the introduction of the modification on the rear body?
Thanks

Hi Ignacio, I assume you're asking about the 528 muffler from Aug 1953 onward? Here's a factory photo from July 1954.

You can see that its' the exact same muffler as the 1952-53 muffler used on 527 and 528 motors, but the exhaust pipes have not been flattened.

The 546 muffler is completely different - wider, different collectors at the top, different baffling, etc.
