VIN # decoding

#1 Post by Ray Fuenzalida »

Just picked up a 356 project from a private junkyard. No paperwork.
Vin is stamped in the metal in the trunk near the opening to the steering knuckle.
Vin is 114996
How can I find out what year this is (suspect 1959) and any other information?
Thanks.

Will you be forced to title it as a self-assembled car instead of a Porsche?

1962. Check under Technical, Factory numbers and chassis and engine numbers tables by Brett Johnson.
'62's had some one-year only parts: bottom sender fuel tank, windshield washer reservoir pick up tube through the reservoir and not the cap, fuel gauge on combo gauge with a red R, etc. Off course your car may have been picked apart.

It is an early 1961 T5. Should not have a fuel filler in the fender, smaller windshield & rear window, rounded front of hood and single grill.

I'm with Larry. Jan/feb 61 BT5. Nothing T6 about it.

Did I misread Brett's chart? If so, sorry for the misinformation.

later 61 coupe, easy to get registration documents on a car this old, especially here in Georgia. There are those here who can get you a kardex

Thanks guys for the info. Going to State Police to see about getting title for a 61 356B T5 body style.
Should work. Will let you know.
Thanks.

Still working on getting the title. Almost there.
Just info.
Vin # 114996 is stamped into the metal just below the fuel tank and is also on a tag inside the driver's side door jamb.
So I guess the # is correct.
Then there is another tag Kunstharzlack Farbton Nr R 741
I assume that's the color code? Seats were white and the carpeting was black. Body is rough but I would guess silver.
And engine # seems to be P * 83326 *

That's all I know so far. Does all that fit?
Thanks.

You are correct about the paint tag. 741 is Slate Grey, a light non-metallic grey. It’s nice.

There’s also an aluminum tag riveted in the trunk that has the Chassis Number stamped, I think its on passenger side by the fuel tank on a 61.

Engine P83326 is a 1959 engine, not from a 61. Probably replaced at one point. Slate gray is fantastic

Here it is in Slate Gray, about 750 numbers earlier than yours.
