I haven't seen any 6V elements for a long time. I just Googled "6 volt cigarette lighter" and there are a few listed for the older cars. Maybe buy one just for the element?

Lou,

I did some checking for you, it seems that the eBay sellers are all on one form of controlled substance or another with prices well past $100 and $200 :

The Samba sellers seem to be a little more realistic:

I saw those and no guarantee that they’ll operate. I’m sure somebody will have a solution…I’d really like to rebuild the original but can’t find parts. Maybe buy one of the domestic 6V and cannibalize it🤷🏻‍♂️

Looking at the domestic ones, I'm not sure how the element is fitted; screwed in or ?

Hi Lou,

Here's a possible solution that would not cost much. Call and ask if they can send you an image of the element and if it screws in:

https://www.westcoastmetric.com/i-22967 ... 08-iv.html

I gotta ask, why do you need your lighter element to work? For lighting cigarettes / cigars or you just want everything in the car to work? I may have a spare that I can test and if it works and you want it, it's yours. I don't need my lighters to work, I just want the receptacle to work for charging things.

I’m using my under dash power socket with a BMW motorcycle usb plug as my lighter socket is very loose for modern accessories. Yours is not like that?

I have purchased Precision Matters full flow oil filter and have no longer the wire drive to the mechanical tachometer. A 12 volt modern electronic tachometer has been used to convert the car's original tachometer. A step up converter like this is used to make the tachometer work in the 6 volt car. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001266721719.html

Another similar step up converter is used to make a 12 volt VDO oil pressure gauge work. VDO oil pressure gauges have very quick responses to oil pressure changes. The 6 volt Yazaki I had before took, for example, at least 30 sec to go to 0 bar when I turned off the engine. That is not good enough!

12 volt H4 LED lamps for the headlights are powered with a more powerful step up converter. https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 12267.html

Understood. I'll check my shelves and see if I have one, will let you know later today hopefully.

Out of the curiosity, what are the other two?

David Green wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2014 4:24 pm How are you guys getting an iPhone to charge using 6v from the accessory socket? My iPhone uses a USB plug/charger and when I hook it up with jumpers to the 6V coming out of the accessory socket the USB charger's “ON” LED doesn’t light and there is no charging output to the iPhone. Many have said it works so is there something I’m doing wrong?
Thanks,
David
Assuming that you put a meter on the leads to and / or contacts in the lighter socket and got a good reading?

Hi Lou,

I tested it and this one works. It does not glow red but is plenty hot enough to light something. Let me know if you want it, no charge.

Lou, did you buy one of the 6 volt vw elements in the ebay listing i identified and try it? Also make sure the ground connection is good. some folks paint the dash, and the ground can be impacted when the lighter is replaced in the dash.

One issue with iPhones is that Apple did something so that non-Apple charging cables don't work very well.
Try with an original charging cable. We have in one car a non-Apple cable and to charge the phone has
to be unlocked, eg. opened.
