Our get it on the road list is getting short.
Wiring harness came out of tunnel easily gives me hope for new one going back in.

Motor mounts are quite different than newer ones, could they be VW?

We are detailing the frunk on the back wall and sides we pulled off a material that seemed like a thick felt, is it available?

The VW and Porsche mounts are different I just went thru this on my 53 beetle. I had a set of 356 mounts and thought I could use them but it caused the engine to sit so high the deck lid spring would hit the fan shroud you can see the difference.

It looks like VW mounts with spacers could work if you cannot get the correct ones.

I'm pretty sure the mounts are the same, as long as they are correct type.

Regarding the gear box mounts, can we talk dimensions here?
What is the claimed difference between the Porsche and the VW part, e.g. at the maximum distance between the (upper) flat surface and the (lower) curved one?
On my VW part that dimension is 22 mm.

Martin

I have had the Porsche mounts for years and were in stoddard bags I would say they are 5mm taller then the VW mounts. I can dig them out and measure if you want me to.

Thanks Tony,
I appreciate your offer. Maybe someone else has a part readily available and finds the time to measure.
If not, I would like to ask you to start digging. Thanks again,
Martin

Hello Spencer,
Thank you for the dimensions and photo documentation. Your parts supply and logistics always amazes me!
If the engine is getting too low, I will put two 2mm flat steel spacers between the mounts and the gear box,
as Martin Benade already suggested.

Hi Mark - I'm resurrecting this thread to ask some questions about the fuse box image in post #1. I hope you're finished with the restoration.
As you may know, I have a series of Pre-A wiring diagrams - 50-51;51-52; early 53; late 53; 54-55. I am pretty confident on the layout accuracy of the diagrams as I used Porsche pencil drawings from the repair manuals or owner's manuals. What is difficult is the wire colors. I worked with Tom Birch, who makes Pre-A harnesses, several years ago to come up with the wire colors that I am using now. Even looking at an original cloth-covered harness, it is not easy to tell what color the wire originally was.
It is substantially the same as my findings, but there are a few differences - my fuse box chart may be somewhat generic as it covers 1950-late1953 models.
  • Is that a YnZ harness in the picture?
I see a brown wire on fuse #5 - is that instrument light power?
Does your car have a trouble light socket?
Is there a Back-up light on your car (powered from fuse #8)
I know this picture is from 2 1/2 years ago, so I don't expect you to have answers off the top of your head, but maybe you have a better memory than I do
Thanks!

Greg, I used on one your diagrams. I think it was wrong for the car or not the same as Tom's wiring. We were able to adapt. I will have to do research in my old parts toremember the whole story. I have the original wiring from my 52 as well as the 56 speedster. I had planned to give to Tom, He doesn't have a place he can keep them or a need any longer.
