Oil Level

#1 Post by Bill Lawless »

I was changing my oil... And I was a bit impatient, didn't wait for it to settle when checking it, and I over filled it by about 1/4 of an inch, rookie mistake!!... Any cool tricks to get a little oil back out???
 Thanks,
Bill

Unscrew the drain plug until it leaks but is still engaging threads so it will not come off

Can also remove oil from the oil filter housing using a turkey baster.

It's only a 10 minute job to remove the oil filter, empty it out and replace it. No mess no fuss.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Wondering how much the oil level will drop when removing the oil from the Filter Can?.. Probably enough!!!!

Yes when hot. So that small amount won't matter. I often deliberately overfill by a small amount

Drive the car as is. overfilling the oil the small amount you have done will NOT matter at all. al

I always overfill by about 1/8". I learned it from my mechanic uncle and I've never had a problem in almost 50 years.

I suspect the oil level was chosen somewhat arbitrarily and that anything close is just fine.
Always under filling by 1/8” would also been a success for 50 years.

But I don't have to top off the oil as often... :P
