I checked dimensions with Rainer for his adaptor design that uses the Mahle filter. There was one internal diameter in the top part that was incorrect - The drawing had 36 mm when Rainer said it should have been 32mm. Note in the CAD model I used 31.5 mm for this dimension to match the diameter used in the Fram PH4 adapter - although it should not make any difference.

For those that want them, attached are PDF engineering drawings from the CAD model.

Jacques - Let's talk next week when I visit about having your guy machine the parts. And about casting the bowls. I am interested in the taller 904 bowl and the shorter 356 Carrera bowl.

I have 3D plastic prints of the adapter parts coming to check before finalizing them for CNC machining. Steve Terrien here in Seattle has a spare filter unit that I can check them in.

See you next Thursday.

Between Joris for 10 sets, me for 2 sets and Chuck for 2 sets (14 sets so far) we are in business. That is enough to justify making a run.

I will keep folks posted on this thread.

Bill,

Add me to the order list, please

I will take 4 x sets

I would also be interested in a Repro. 904 Bowl

Thanks for all the stuff you get involve in and pass on to us luddites

Bill,
Please add 2 for me. I may have a spare bowl if I didn’t give it to Jacques. I’ll check. Rainier, you came up with a great solution
And thanks to Bill for providing a batch.

We have one of Rainer's filter kits in our GT now and it is a piece of art.
Thanks for all you do for the four-cam community Rainer.

We have a Wellington Rennsport Werke PH-4 kit too with filers if anyone would prefer that path.

Status update a the oil filter adapter parts. The plastic prototype parts and an Mahle filter arrived and have been successfully test fit into an original filter cup and top. I made a few minor modifications to Rainer’s design:
Prototype adapter parts
Prototype adapter parts
- added an O-ring on the top adapter piece to seal in the filter top cover
- increased the size of the hole in the bottom adapter that fits over the center shaft in the cup and made a bit more room in the O-ring groove so it will not take so much brute force to install.

I have sourced viton O-rings and also found a more readily available filter element. The Mahle OX 426 D2 is difficult to find. But the equivalent WIX 57064XP is readily available for about $10 on Amazon.

Now to get quotes for having Jacques CNC shop make the parts.

Ernie Wilberg sent me a photo that indicates the oil filter unit used on the 356 carrera, 904, some 906 and 911R was originally used in an aircraft application. They were made by Mann and Hummel and you could get a new one at least as late at September 1979.

Thrifty Porsche almost always looked for a ready made part for their race cars and this is no exception.

Hi Bill,
Please put me down for 1 set, also a 356 filter bowl and bolt, I have one of Bob G's filter tops and a PH4.Engine still not in the car so will be a great addition to have an easily available filter to swop out after run up.

Great work, many thanks
Nigel

Work is in progress.

I decided I need to have the adapters in the same cad model as the oil filter cup and filter element to make sure everything inside fits. I also want to see if Rainer’s adapter design can be modified to work not only with the Mahle filter he recommended but also with Wix filters. The Mahle filter is easy to find in Europe but not so easy in the US. Wix, Baldwin and Fram Are easy to find in the US but are 2.5mm larger OD and hit the curved lower internal surface of the cup before they bottom on the adapter. I need to be able to see a cross section to make sure it will all fit correctly.

After several hours more CAD work I determined that an adapter that would work with both the Mahle and Wix filters was possible. However it requires 3 more O-rings, two of which could be easily dislodged when changing filters. After further discussion with Rainer we concurred the simplest solution in terms of both design and ease of use was adapters that will work only with the Mahle filter.

A screen shot cross section of the final design for the Mahle filter is shown below. Adapter parts are blue, filter is green and O-rings are orange.

Before making parts I normally make 3D printed plastic parts and do a “proof of concept” check. The proof of concept is shown below.

I still need to make the technical drawings that must be sent with the CAD files to the CNC machining vendor, but the CAD software automated much of the drawing process.

After much searching I found a different Mahle filter that will be suitable for the taller 904 filter cup. The next job after the 356 Carrera adapters are out being made is to design the 904 adapters. I think the 356 carrera top adapter can be used unchanged but the bottom adapter will require modification.

Bill,
Is there any chance of your being able to supply the whole filter assembly? I have the one in my Carrera with the Chuck Forge Corvair set up, but I need another complete filter assembly top and all.

Hi Harlan
Bill and i are considering that. the question is how many are needed we can do 1 offs from solid billet and casting requires more investment if you are not using the stock thermostant you sould use any external oil filter adapter.

Hi Jacques,
I've made oil filter adapters for other race cars in the past. As I recall there are two slightly different standards for the common spin-on filter threads, one metric and one US. The spin-on filters seal to a flat surface. It shouldn't be too difficult to machine a filter top like the Carrera and adapt the standard filter thread tube of your choice. Way back then, I bet that is how Chuck Forge adapted the Carrera top. I guess I'll have to open my spare PH 4 filter and take a look at it. Too messy to look at the car.
