Brett ,
Could not find an illustration of such a clock listed in 55 spare part list.
Had this clock the dimension of the speedometer like the early Veigel one for the radio delete plate ?
Was it produced by Veigel or a VDO ?

Tom,
This clock came out of a 55, It is a Viegel and dated 53.
It is the same size as the Speedometer and the Tach.
Hopefully Brett will see this and give us more information?

This is a fairly rare option as you suspect. Pre-A black/green clock options were as follows:
Large clock (Kardex dates 6/52-9/55)
Large clock instead of ash tray (Kardex dates 6/55-9/55)
Small glovebox clock (Kardex dates 4/52-10/55)
They were available for the Model 52-1955. Not surprisingly, none are recorded being installed in a Speedster.
I have only seen Veigel large clocks and have no photos or information on the small glovebox clock. It was about 2:1 more popular than the large one. The small clocks on 356As were VDO. The first ones were 8-day wind-up versions, which were replaced by electric clocks for the T 2 and thereafter.

Yes, the large clocks are all made by Veigel. Here's a photo from Reutter factory photos advertising the new ski rack on a '53 coupe. Notice that the clock replaces the ashtray. This is the case for cars with a radio. I suspect if the buyer or distributor wanted a clock in a car without a radio, it would replace the dummy gauge for 1952-53 model year cars, keeping the ashtray. Though I have never seen this on an existing car. Usually cars with optional large clocks already have optional radios.
The factory installation replacing the ashtray is pretty nice. The hole for the clock has rolled edges and welded fill at the edges where the rectanglar opening for the intended ashtray was.
