Carrera oil filter - adaptor for spin on filter
Several years ago I purchased a reproduction carrera oil filter top from Bob Garretson that I thought came with the parts to adapt for use with a PH 4 spin on oil filter. I pullet it out yesterday and think that I am probably missing some parts as I do not seem to have a part that would allow the spin on filter to actually screw on.
Does anyone have a spin on filter adapter on their car that they could send some photos of the internal parts?

Hi Bill,
I have one if you would like to copy it let me know and I will mail it to you. I took pictures, clicked on insert images, and no joy.

Hi Bill
The PH-4 is not a spin-on it uses a bolt just like the original, but it is imperial not metric. you may have to enlarge the hole. do you still have the ring that you install in the stock top. i have some if you lost it and bolts sorry, they are not Titanium

A better filter than the crappy screen Porsche provided is a great idea. I do have a problem with the spin-on filter though in that you can't see any impending doom unless you cut the filter open. Years a go I got around this by using a Lexus element in the original bowl along with a couple of machined end caps. This gives the illusion of an original filter and the ability to see the giant chunks of metal your lovely engine is generating should you be so unfortunate.

Re: Carrera oil filter - adaptor for spin on filter
Well, the problem in this case is my lack of knowledge, not lack of parts
. I did not know the Fram PH4 filter used a bolt to secure it - I was looking for a part that looked like an externally threaded pipe. So I do have all the parts needed to use the Fram PH4 filter. For future reference of others, see the parts below.
I do however like Rainer’s Lexus filter mod. I will give him a call to explore that option.

Do you also have the lower bowl that holds the filter?

Re: Carrera oil filter - adaptor for spin on filter
No, I have only the reproduction filter top. Bob did not sell a reproduction bowl. Using the Fram PH4 adapter replaces the bowl.
Although if someone had a spare bowl they were willing to sell I would consider purchase and using Rainer’s Lexus conversion filter parts.

Hi Bill
the PH-4 was used on Corvairs i doubt if your local auto parts store carries them. So Rainer's solution even looks better.

If you stick with the Garretson adapter, the Wix 51038 (NAPA 1038) is equivalent to the Fram PH-4 and fairly easy to source, plus Wix filters are superior to the current Frams. I bought a filter cutter/opener (they are cheap), and open the filter to check for any debris whenever changing the oil. I also use a copper sealing washer for the adapter bolt.

Hi Jacques - I too like Rainer’s solution. But I do not have the original oil filter cup. Do you have an orphaned one I could buy when I am there next week?
And yes, the Fram PH4 is Not easily available. I thought I had ordered 2 from Summit racing but received HP4 - which is totally different.

Re: Carrera oil filter - adaptor for spin on filter
Chuck - I recommend against using the Wix filter. I had three Wix filters pop the rubber seal and make a huge mess on customer cars. Thankfully it happened while I was driving the cars instead of afterwards with the customers driving, so we could catch the problem. Not fun at all. I thought we were doing something wrong until I compared the PH4 seal setup versus the Wix. The Wix uses a conventional square cut round seal found on almost every other type of spin on filter, while the PH4 uses a seal that wraps around the metal top lip of the filter body. On the three cars that popped the Wix seal, we replaced them with PH4 filters and the problem went away.
Also - make sure to use the correct fractional size (not metric) copper or aluminum seal on the bolt. The "close but not exactly the same" metric sealing washer can leak if you don't have it perfectly centered on the bolt head when tightened.
Drilling the console casting slightly larger for the PH4 bolt isn't a big deal. The original Mann filer bolt, with a rounded bottom acting as a sealing junction instead of a seal washer, is big enough to seal again if you wanted to go back to the original setup.
Bill - I might have an orphaned bottom cup to use with your console, let's talk at the swap meet.
