Is the 616 Crankcase Strong Enough ?

#1 Post by John Clarke »

Is the 616 engine case and also Our gearboxes strong enough to cope with the extra power put out from large displacements of 2.1
/ 2.2 Litres ? Obviously our case limits the enlargements with barrel studs, head and case bores, proximity of the Camshaft. Smaller !! Main bearings. Etc. Are they 'Grenade' Engines ?
Regards Jay

Isn't there an article on this from Paul in the mag? I think he sounds the part that takes all stress and, maybe, suggests they should be checked/upgraded?

It all depends on your right foot and how you shift. Anything can be broken.

741 transmissions have been raced for decades and can take a serious beating. 519 not so much?

I’d think a carefully built 2.2 could last a lot longer than a poorly built stocker.

Jay,
Your question would be better directed to Mike Smith at PRI in England in person rather than to random opinion on this forum.

My personal engine started with a 356/912 case 1883 C.C. On a chassis dyno produces 140 Horsepower. Which makes the car plenty fast. The car is electronically fuel injected. (This is a description of my personal car) I am sorry the Talk List does not permit me to further elaborate.
I personally would stay away from engines that use a stroker crank. !! Your experience and the shop that will be assisting you COULD make this into an overwhelming project!!. Find out who is an experience shop on the West Coast and what it will cost for what you want. Al Zim

Al, I’d be interested in the details of your fuel injection system. I’m sure you’d not get in trouble telling us what you did to your car.

Hi John
Experience has shown that Wilhoit and others demostrated that you can get away with this nonsense. If you want an answer consider that the basic design was for a 36hp VW engine of the same period. VW a big company abandoned the 1200cc 36hp engine in favor of a more robust 1200cc 40hp with room to grow to 1600cc. these were the state of the Art in the 1960s. now why would you put effort into creating a more powerful engine/transmission by taxing an obsolete platform?

Chuck at our shop has built EFI motors. One for me. A fun project, but not worth the effort and expense. As I always have done, I go back to the basics with a big bore and cam to match. That said, these projects are fun for the guys who just need to push the envelope.. ............Jim.

Al,
Please put the details of your fuel injection engine on the Vendor Announcements forum and sell it!
