944 service in SF Bay Area?

#1 Post by Adam Johnson »

Can anybody recommend a shop in the SF Bay Area for 944 service?

Don Wise in Campbell isn’t doing 944 work any more.

Car & owner are in Belmont, so anything on the mid-peninsula (San Carlos, San Mateo, Palo Alto) would be great.

Thank you.

Adam, I had Modderman Services, in Mt View, do some work on my 968, David and one of his mechanics know transaxle cars. Also try Jimmy at Junipero Sera Porsche and Mercedes in Daly City. BTM is Campbell will do work on them but way expensive labor rate.

You could also check with RMG, Dan and Dan took over the shop from Bob, or Marvin at the Rennshop, or Tony Heyer Performance, they may know something about 944s. Fortunately they aren't complex like the 928. If you need parts: try High Performance House in Redwood City, Rich sometimes has transaxle parts or whole cars. Einmalig in Huntington Beach bought a lot of Parts Heaven's transaxle parts. 944 Parts Store.Com, 944online.com,944only.com, Paragon-products.com, Zim's, Rennbay, and AutohausAZ. All have some parts and knowledge, but really need to know the parts numbers, and VIN # when ordering as lots of small changes and updates over the years. . Download the PET from Porsche Classic complete parts listing, and also the PET on seats for interior items.

This is great help, Steve. Thank you.

Once Wise’s shop said they stopped servicing the 944s, my buddy just didn’t know where to turn.

Transaxle cars are becoming like 356s very few shops know anything about them, parts are a mystery to the Porsche dealers, and many of the 3rd party replacement parts may fit but are not great quality mainly knockoff VW from unknown lands. Have him look at Pelican Parts Forum for some DIY, and subscribe to Rennlist he will find a lot of answers there, invaluable resource of information for all non 356 models.

FWIW a 944 owner friend here in Reno says this relatively new forum is worthwhile:

https://www.carpokes.com/

His 944 mechanic moved from Oakland to near Reno.
