Solex Air Filters

#1 Post by Steve Proctor »

Can anyone tell me if the mesh-type Solex 40P11 air filters have internal velocity stacks?

Can anyone opine as to the impact on performance or velocity stacks versus none?

I've played around with this, as have many others through the years that may chime in. But it's be hard to find a practical difference between with or w/o, even on a dyno. Weber IDF40 have them, and I use them in the 912. But would it make a difference if I removed them? I don't think so.

Velocity stacks are an essential to obtaining maximum performance from your engine. This is not like sticking something COOL on your engine. Displacement, Camshaft design. and head configuration are critical ingredients necessary for successful performance. By using fuel injection and a Dyno tailoring the engine output can be done. This is not for the faint of heart or for a cheap rebuild. Zim

Al, I think you missed my point, most guys do it because it looks cool, not because they are trying to maximize performance. My point was that since they do look cool, you've already won over half the guys who are thinking about it. It's like Speedster seats, are they more comfortable then regular seats? No, but they look cool, so guys will squeeze their butt into one.

Unfortunately, unless they are contained within a filter, they can provide for honing your cylinders as you drive. Of course, having them inside a filter solves that issue but removes the cool.

I have them on most of my cars. Only because I like the look. The way I drive, my wife says they are a joke. She is right. ....Jim.

Adam: ZIMZ is Not in the "LOOKS COOL" business we are in the Horsepower Business.

Wes: The Velocity Stacks are attached within the filter. Filter construction is similar to the K-N filter. Zim

I hear ya, Al. Everyone with carbs on their 356 should change them out for fuel injection. But fuel injection DOESN'T LOOK COOL. So I'm sticking with my Zeniths and Solexs.

A story behind the glasses: They were given to me by Mike Robbins they are still in a file cabinet in the storage building. He was an excellent technician and served the Registry and PCA on official capacity. Mike is the only one with more than one picture on my bulletin board. He was an excellent friend! Al Zim
