Carpet material spare tire cover

#1 Post by John Ballantyne »

Did a search and can't find any information on this so throwing this out there to the forum.. Im continuing the restoration of my 62 356b cabriolet. This car was parked in the late 70s by the second owner with a bad starter. Just had the top redone by Autos International and asked Dorian and his dad about this carpet piece but they didn't have any info. Original red square weave carpet was in the car but in poor shape as the car spent some time outside, unfortunately. Anyway, there is this curious carpet remnant with a circular wire frame that is the size of the spare tire. The carpet is the same red square weave. Its just a guess but a possibility would be a spare tire cover. Has anyone ever heard of or seen something like this on a 356b? No mention of this on the Kardex. I have photos of course but can't figure out how to attach. John

Yea I've never seen one either but I'm no expert. There must be a listing of available accessories that were offered. If nothing like that is listed then its a mystery. The baffling part is that its the German square weave in same color. John

Is it possibly the remains of the rear carpet behind the seats? That has a thick wire inside the top edge.

Very possible. And makes so much more sense. I'll look. Thanks.

Thanks Martin. You are correct. I dug out my old carpet set and compared to the new one still in the box and thats it. Now back to work. Thanks again, John.

Martin's right, its the wire in the carpet piece behind the rear seats of a cabriolet.
