Many thanks to Spencer Harris for his work to collect and organize information on 356 steering boxes…including a new article he wrote and links to factory reference materials.
There is a now a dedicated topic page here:

If there are some particularly good forum topics on Steering, I’d appreciate members emailing me. I’ll add those links to the page.

Re: Tech Library addition: Steering
BE CAREFUL IN REPAIRING THE STEERING BOX! The worm gears fit is critical. No new reasonable price parts are available! Maybe no parts are available. We have tried to have these manufactured asking everyone...WITHOUT SUCCESS... IMPORTANT THE PITMAN ARM ON THE VOLKSWAGEN IS DIFFERENT THAN THE PORSCHE. THIS WILL CAUSE A STEERING PROBLEM IN TURNS. Jay: Your confidence in the ability of the Registry individuals to comprehend IMPORTAND DIFFERENCES and repair their cars safely exceeds my confidence. MY favorite example is the posting that I have done regarding TORQUE. If you do not have a torque wrench how are you going to get the flywheel tight or not distort the valve adjusting nuts...better still how do you measure 7 foot pounds of torque necessary to install the sump plate correctly...especially the aluminum ones. if you use a 3/8 inch ratchet. See what your mechanic has!
Do ZF gearboxes exist I think we have a few used ones but they have not been reconditioned. Zim

I think most of us are intelligent enough to recognize what things are important without all the caps. All the capitalized words is somewhat insulting, not that I get upset about it.
