Vic;
If I'm understanding your question correctly the gear shaft is "not" plugged.
See attached pictures.
If I misinterpreted your question let me now.

Bob; I was referring to the reverse idler gear shaft; it appears to be sealed.

Vic;
For what it's worth.
Some additional numbers uncovered.
1. It appears the case halves number match "253/253".
2. An additional number stamped on the case "2893".
3. Numbers stamped on the arm "2115" along with a "3/P".
4. Rubber "26893 1\10 2116".
I think that's the last of them .

Re: Assistance Requested - '52 - 519 Transmission Identification
Vic, in my experience the earliest 519 idler shafts had solid, undrilled centers, with only a relief on the shaft surface to capture some oil.Vic Skirmants wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 7:43 am Bob; I was referring to the reverse idler gear shaft; it appears to be sealed.
Notice in the first photos of Bob's transmission case that it doesn't have an oiling tube, and never did, as it lacks the two notches which would keep the tube in place.

Yes, Jon, I have also seen one with a solid idler shaft. Thanks for pointing out the lack of notches for the reverse oiling tube.

Hi Jon, sorry for the late reply. Just saw this.Jon Bunin wrote: ↑Sat Oct 23, 2021 5:59 pm James, I haven't seen any factory reference for the H-codes, and I have quite a few 519 service bulletins and circular letters dating back to Sept 1952.
I've assumed that the letter H was for Hinterachse, a general Porsche term for the transmission and rear axle.
I don't think the H-codes had any relation to the gear manufacturers. It's common to find gears or synchromesh from two or all three manufacturers in one transmission.
The common assumption is that the codes referred to the gear ratios, which would include the 7/31 or 8/35 ring & pinion as well.
The "H" suffix only appears on some (many?, most?) cases. For instance the original case for my 1953 coupe, case 1781, has no "H" designation. It was stamped without any H code on the case itself, and recorded the same way on the Kardex. So difficult to understand that if it was important, why other cases would have that and mine (and many others) would not.
Yeah, I've combed through service bulletins as well, and can't come up with anything either. Definitely requires more research.

Re: Assistance Requested - '52 - 519 Transmission Identification
SOMEWHERE! if I can remember correctly Mike Robbins had thoroughly research all the markings on the transmission and housings. This was published a long time ago in the Registry. It should not be difficult to find. Mike was substantially older than I was and an avid collector of early 356 information. Take a look for it and post to give us a clue where to look. Thanks Zim
