engine without engine n°

#1 Post by Sebastien De Cock »

Hi guys

I have a '57 356 Carrera 1500GS. On the Cardex I can see that the original engine (90817) was replaced in 8/1959 with a new engine in guarantee.
Due to this change the 'spare' engine has no engine number on it. But there are other numbers/signs on the engine. Also the date is mentioned.
Does anybody know what the dots mean and the numbers?
The engine date is also written on different steel then pressed in the engine. Does anybody have this also on his engine?

Thanks!

Sebastien,

It appears your engine was replaced with a pushrod engine judging by the engine number scribbled on the kardex. The engine currently in your car has some indication of being an earlier 547/1 engine, heads, 4-bolt carbs. Early heads were often dated. The other number K37 identifies the gear set. A “matching engine” would have this number stamped on both heads with the gears in the engine carrying the same number. Valve covers will also be stamped to match them with the heads. On some later engines in have also seen the gear number stamped on the case. Some better pictures will help us tell more. The punched dots shown are not factory as far as I know.

Thanks for the input!
I installed a Sebring exhaust and found 3 other numbers, any idea what they mean?

Yes, the 10x,xx relates to the crank to lay shaft centreline distance. Blueprint value was 105,00. The other numbers stamped on the side of the case pertain to the depth of the A/D pinion surface

Where do you mean exactly? Can you show the location on a picture?

The bellhousing area. This will be a bit of a challenge with the engine installed. Spyders cases had their engine number stamped in that area

The engine has to be redone, it leaks a lot of oil

Here I have 2 numbers extra

I think "h85" and "39"

Hello Sebastien,

The bell housing engine number for a Spyder's would be in this area in between my fingers. And the numbers on the valve cover are matching numbers so you know which head to put each valve cover on. The matching number will also be stamped on the side of the head.

Would a warranty engine be installed in a two year old car? And one could downgrade to a pushrod engine on a warranty claim?
