Unidentified bolts

#1 Post by Jim Wayman »

I have had these small bolts for many years and don't know where I got them or what they are for. Maybe someone out there can help identify them. They are M4 X 6MM hex bolts with 7MM across the flats heads. They appear to e cad plated and are drilled for safety wire. They came in a plastic Porsche parts bag.

I've been trying to envision where a 4mm bolt would have to be secured with safety wire. I haven't run across one on a 356.

Look like the bolts that hold the brake assembly to the hub on drum brake models--three per side and drilled for wire lacing.

Too small for those bolts, Pete. The backing plate bolts are 10mm.

Jim, what is stamped on the heads of the bolts, Karro, NSF, Kamax, Verbus, etc.?

That's interesting, Jim. I'll check my stash but I don't think I have any original M4 hex head bolts. 4mm is not something I would use for a strong assembly but the safety wire holes may indicate use in a vibration setting. The smallest bolt I have seen on my 356 is a M6 aside from the radio power to radio bracket screws. Darned if I know! Was the Porsche bag sealed?

Brain fart: the hex bolts for the T-6 horn grills are smaller but not safety wired.

they look like MG fly wheel bolts, which are wired. Can't remember what the 356 ones are like - been 20 yrs since I was that deep into the engine.

356 doesn't use small bolts for the flywheel; one BIG bolt.
