I love my Alfa, 1969 roundtail Spider, 1750 with the original Spica injection. It has been very reliable. They get a bad rap I think, from hack mechanics that don't properly maintain or repair them. Fun factor is awesome for 1/10th the cost of a 356 open car. Parts are plentiful and relatively inexpensive compared to 356 parts.

I love Alfas but John Hearn is not a fan so I needle him every chance I get.

We owned 3 new Alfas, a Spider and 2 Milanos, and drove them all with almost zero problems. Alfas are so sweet to drive. 100k happy miles on each of the Milanos. The Spider was an 82 and a joy to drive. I would like to buy a Guilia Spider 1600cc with disc brakes but I have too many cars. Or would I rather have an SS?

We ended up with three Alfa's a few years ago 50's/60's ones so comparable to 356's. I was astounded at how primitive they are compared to Porsche. We were putting them back together and kept thinking we were missing parts, we weren't, they were just crude compared to what we were used to.

Aluminum double overhead cam. Five speed transmission long before Porsche. Big aluminum drum brakes with 3 leading shoes. Early to switch to disc brakes without the foolish annular reinvent the wheel experiment. Fantastic handling. Race car of choice for Chuck Stoddard who was also a dealer for Porsche. In period, Porsche and Alfa Romeo stood alone as "less is more" sports cars with comfort, compliant suspension, and superior handling. Alfa did have one flaw, some cars used Lucas electrics, only some used Bosch. Porsche and Alfa are both wonderful to drive.

The alfas are more high strung and want to be pushed. To me a 356 or even a early 911 doesn’t have to be driven in anger to be enjoyed. The transmissions are wash as the Alfa’s use the Porsche style synchronizers. Just got done doing some work on a Montreal and I wasn’t impressed by the engineering of it.

'There's lies, there's damn lies, and then there's statistics" Mark Twain.

The stats in the article will be driven in part by the number of each car out there, available for ownership. If a million were manufactured back in the day, more inquiries on insuring that restored car will be made. Also price of the car will drive the number of people who are asking for insurance. Fewer folks can afford to own the expensive cars, and this will be reflected in the numbers of requests for quotes.

I may have just biased the numbers for Hagerty's next article. Just last week got two quotes for my 356s.

Rudy, you beat me to it! Totally agree. Not what I'd call a statistically valid study - this is based on observational data and is likely to be highly biased. Not only are the points you make appropriate, but you have to consider they are only looking at people who have made calls to Hagerty - what is the demographics of those who use Hagerty and are they actually representative of the broader real world? I would assume a lot of younger drivers are bundling insurance with the daily drivers, not making calls to Hagerty so you may not be getting an accurate snap shot.
Separately, if you look on some of the places "the kids" are posting to (YouTube, etc), you'll see there is a lot of activity in that group related to Porsches. Not necessarily the older gens - but to the brand.

I take those observations from Hagerty more as a casual impression of trends. Not meaningless but not science.
