Exhaust trumpet original finish

#1 Post by Jan Kolm »

Anyone know what the original finish was on B/C exhaust trumpets?

The '61 trumpets I am cleaning up to reuse have an oxidized, brownish coating on them that is not rust and flakes right off.

I also have one aluminum guard off my brother's long-departed '63 with a trumpet that looks like it was plated at one time.

Let me answer my own question...

Just got back from a show where there were three T6s present. here are my observations:

Car #1: 356C -- Gloss Black, but heavily discolored in places

Car #2: 356B T6 -- Traces of plating present (didn't observe if the guards were aluminum)

Car #3: 356B T6 -- Repainted with high-temperature, satin black paint

My answer: Either high-temperature, gloss black paint or plated is original.

My decision: Satin black, high-temp BBQ grill paint (hides the pits best)

Is an "exhaust trumpet" the piece that is bolted to the bumper guard via a stud in the guard to funnel exhaust through the hole in the bumper guard?
