Recreating a few pictures

#1 Post by George Krompecher »

I live not far from the Furkapass, the mountain pass where James Bond followed Goldfinger in the famous 007 movie of the same name.

A book has been published a few years ago narrating the film crew's stay in Andermatt and the film scenes' shooting. Quite a few hitherto unpublished pics are in this book, titled "The Goldfinger Files" (ISBN 978-3-95829-746-3).

We made a day of it, first time we travel so far with the '59. I dusted the Leica off, and we spent a few rewarding hours scouting the turns of the Furkapass above Realp to find the exact spot, and we did. The angles are slightly different, because the road has been repaved and is higher, and because trafic would't allow us to park the car as they did in july 1964.

But it has been a beautiful day, the pictures will make for a nice montage, and we learned a lot about the car.

Now that is one of the best postings ever. Goldfinger was my very favorite Bond films. I'll never forget "Pussy Galore". .....Jim.

Hi George, What a great post, you came up with a brilliant idea. Excellent roads, perfect weather, beautiful scenery. My great grandfather came from Safien, just over 100 kilometres away, but I see it would take over 2 hours to drive there. So I imagine it would make for a pretty exciting drive. Lucky you. Thanks for sharing your photos. jim

Yea, that was really fun. Thanks for posting. Looks like a super beautiful part of the world, and perfect for driving a 356. (or an Aston Martin). :-)

Wow! Great... "what those guys (above) said"!

It would be a lot of fun to see you (and others) duplicate the concept with other Bond movies. Or... using stills from other similar popular vintage movies. Maybe you could call the new thread "The Greg Scallon Challenge."

Jim, you recall bubblegum cards from childhood? Vastly most were baseball cards, of course, but there were Beatles cards, and, yes, even James Bond cards. I had quite a few of them, stills from Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger. Probably produced in '64 or '65, I don't recall any Thunderball, all B&W images. God, I wish I still had those cards. The bubblegum - not so much. Ah, ... youth!

Probably my favorite Bond film is On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) with "the other fellow" George Lazenby, Diana Rigg, and Telly Savalas. But I also like Thunderball and Goldfinger. I read all of Fleming's novels when I was a kid, a great way to while away summer vacation afternoons in an air-conditioned county library. (Few homes had A/C in the '60s where I grew up.)

When Thunderball was new I pestered my parents to take me to see (one of) the Aston Martin at some strip mall. I still have a Corgi toy model of it, and haven’t yet lost the ejectable passenger wielding a gun.

Thank you all, good people.
This is why I bought a 356. Not to restore, but to enjoy and maintain.
In the so called "George Krompecher" challenge, I'd like to submit 2 more entries that I did years ago, the 2nd one in part with 356s. I'll try and recreate the 2nd one with the A when I get to that.
