WCSTA –08- 1959 356 A 108183 Father Son Project

#1 Post by Jim Slaby »

After turning down many Speedsters in the 1970’s because $3,000 was too much, 30 years later I found this car while looking through the local paper. It was listed underneath a garage sale ad. We went to look at the car and initially turned it down. The seller wouldn’t sell it to the others who came and looked because they were lowballing him. A few months later we went back and paid him and trailered home our new project.

We first started by removing the old house paint on it and the 2 inches of bondo all around. Then we proceeded to pop out the roof dents where a tree had fallen on it. Next we moved onto the front fender and worked on it.

Then the accident happened…the unthinkable. I get a call at work and get informed a hit & run driver smashed into my garage.
Image
The Porsche took most of the hit. Smashed the front fender, busted the windshield, and pushed the car back 6 feet into a cement wall. We made a police report but the driver was never found. Not only did the car get smashed but so did our dreams…we eventually repaired the garage, cleaned up the mess of scattered tools, and have began to start on it again.

Jim,

If you don't use phosphoric acid on the metal before you media blast, there will not be enough distinguishable metal parts left to help identify what parts of the chassis are serviceable and what patterns are needed to rebuild that which remains. In my humble opinion.
