356 Keys

Anyone know what the 356 application of this key is? Lingle cut on one side and no cuts on the reverse.

Looks like a pre-A key, the ones used with a starter button.

Jim, You saved me from the ignominious feeling of total key ignorance that I felt when I saw your original post. The next thing I expected was a discussion of early and late lingles...
By the way, I believe that that was the key blank to Ferry Porsche's safety deposit box in Zell am See, Austria...

Jim,
You have a Bosch key blank used from 1952 to about April of 54. The aftermarket replacement key is the Taylor 61NC

50-51 SH/ZS 1/3 and used the Bxxx keys steel blanks (Taylor 63 C) note the replacement designated by "C" indicates the blank was chrome plated
52-54 SH/ZS 1/1, also using the Bxxx keys brass blanks (Taylor 61NC) "NC" stands for nickel chrome over brass
April –June 1954 to about early '56 356A the SH/ZS 4/1 lock with Cxxx keys brass blanks (M63B) This is a brass key blank...

there is a difference in the original key blanks and the period replacement key blanks...

It would be useful to see the date code of Sebastian's ignition switch. Normally the earlier switch would have the steel key blank but the key blank profile is the same. The brass key blank could be paired with the earlier style of ignition switch if the date was close to the cross over. the date code on the early switches can be either on the side or located on the end center between all of the posts.

As Rick says, these are the B-code blanks for 1950 to early 1954 Bosch ignition locks. The original keys that came with your new Porsche were nickel plated. Bosch replacement blanks were sometimes not.

Rick, do these not work with all B-code locks?

Jim, I'd be happy to purchase these from you if they're available. Ping me. Your email contact info is not set up through 356Talk.

James,
You are right all B code ignition switches had the same profile. I think originally the earliest switches had a steel blank instead of a brass blank all with the same key way.

Maybe someone can post a pic of Tony Euganeo's key chart. That should be a permanent sticky or resource post.

Good idea, Mike. I'll send these PDF files to Mark in case he would like to use for the Quick reference portion on the new website.

Btw, this is what the keys that came with Porsches actually looked like. Nickel-plated brass key with the key code stamped on one side.

Despite my flippant posts earlier I must say that the range of knowledge regarding the nuances of early Porsche keys is truly impressive, and will doubtless be very helpful to other 356 enthusiasts going forward.
I attach a photograph of the 1954 550 Spyder that participated in the Mille Miglia showing a very similar key.

Dick,

Might be the picture but interesting bezels on those gauges. Also the combo gauge face looks to be set very deep
