Beck Fuel Gage

#1 Post by Jim Wayman »

Attached is a drawing of the sender for the Beck Fuel Gage. Can anyone provide the dimensions indicated in the diagram? I may have the relationship between the parts in the wrong order, but the dimensions should straighten that out. Thanks,

Hi Jim,

These measurements from the capillary unit off my '55 coupe:

A = 21.5 cm

B = 21.0 cm

C = 21.4 cm

First I measured the vertical height with the assembly lying horizontal, visually lining the tape to 90 degrees and got 21.6 cm for A. Second method was clamping the unit to my steel bench top, measuring from the top of the studs to the bell bottom and subtracting the stud length which resulted in 21.5 cm. Only a mm difference, but the vertical measurement is a bit more accurate given the bends in the tubing. The 6mm tube is 5mm shallower than the bottom of the bell, and the cap tube extends from the outer tube to 1 mm shallower than the bell bottom.

Notice the little slices in the bell skirt. Likely to prevent an air pocket from forming and being trapped under the bell piece. I never noticed that before, and I'll bet if I cleaned all the crud off you could really see them!

Spencer

Thanks for the measurements. I think that the splits in the bell are fatigue cracks, not part of the manufacture design.

Thanks for those who helped me with my Beck fuel gage. The 6mm brass tube was corroded and the air chamber bell was completely disintegrated. Fabricated new brass tubing. Thanks to Spencer for the dimensions. Thanks to Kuzu for the barrel type pump and thanks to Albert for the new pump diaphragm and bell. It works.

Is the bell a 1/2” copper pipe cap?

No, it is a special bell provided by Albert Haefner of Classic Parts France.
