Leistritz Muffler Fit Issues

#1 Post by Steve Crist »

63 Porsche T6: I bought a Leistritz Muffler in Europe. Fitting it to the motor, it appears the muffler is out of level by 3/16" (higher on driver's side). The lower pipe that connects top the J pipe makes contact with the flapper box on the driver's side. Passenger side is good. Has anyone else experienced this? Do I have a defective part? OR do I need to cut and re-work/weld. . . . buy a new muffler? Thxs, Steve

Steve,

Are you sure it's a Leistritz? Never had an issue w/those, but sure did w/several Dansk mufflers w/their 40mm lower inlets and out-of-line relationship between the upper inlets
to fit the ports!!!

Dick,

Positive it's Leistritz, it's stamped on the part complete with serial number. Maybe they all need to be tweaked in order to fit (like everything else on the car). Thxs

I had a similar problem with a Leistritz. One if the flanges was off about 7 degrees. Was able to file it so it was parallel to the head.

LEISTRITZ hasn't made Porsche mufflers in at least 20 years. In the day and even today with the Dansk brand, it's common for the inlet tubes to be bent in shipment. Your vendor should check each muffler on a sample engine to be sure they send out a muffler that will fit up to a stock engine (not one wider with a shimmed out big bore kit).

The modern Dansk muffler DOES NOT FIT. I've used 3 in the past few years and none of them fit. The 1/3 pipes are too large and allow leaks that result in backfires. They also do not fit the new repro stainless heat exchangers that Stoddard sells. BANG BANG! The 2/4 pipes on the Dansk don't fit either....even though the flanges slide over all 4 studs without bending. In other words, the pipes are not bent in shipping(which may sometimes happen) but rather the flanges are at the wrong offset and not parallel. This keeps the gaskets from being sealed properly. BANG BANG! Can't somebody correct this situation so that we don't have to re-make these expensive new parts?

The good news is that they make better power than the majority of the loud performance exhausts that are for sale.

Dansk mufflers stink. They also like to crack at the inlet pipe welds. More backfiring. For as expensive as they are one would think they would be made to a higher level of quality. The Leistritz unit on my Roadster is going strong after 23 years; I'm on my third Dansk on my coupe in 8 years and I had to have some secondary gussets welded on my current muffler to reinforce the pipes, after they cracked yet again.

I have two Dansk mufflers I gut from Brad. Richard (NLA) trial fit both prior to shipping. I've had both of them on numerous cars, and they fit perfectly. I'm referring to the "Sport" loud model.

Pretty sure the guy who can do so is posting in this thread.

Would one of the Dansk vendors care to inform us as to wether Dansk has been questioned about the fit problems?

I thinking of buying a muffler for my C. I want the stock type.

Who makes one that fits?

Anyone have a good used one for sale?

Thanks

Got a Dansk for my Euro heater model, that was no prize either. Sat too far from the mount, had to shorten the in-tubes.
