If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

A Reuters article this morning said the boat had 1000 Porsches and 189 Bentley’s on it, in addition to VW’s and Audi’s. Apparently the lithium-ion batteries have now caught on fire on the electric cars, but they still don’t know what caused the blaze. The ship is completely on-fire five feet above the waterline. That’s got to be at least $150 million in MSRP Porsches….

I don't know any more than the reports say but there are things to think about. Was it Nissan that announced recently that you should not park their EV in the garage since they were catching fire? Definitely spontaneous combustion happens with some EVs and even some smart phones. Now think about how tightly packed the cars are in a ship. They can't just send the one burning car over the side. What about the ship owners? There are rules about ground and air shipping of batteries because of the danger. 4000 new cars lost plus a ship seems to be not worth the risk to transport any dangerous cargo in the mix. Or, maybe it was just a discarded cigarette?

This also happened in 2019...

Rumors say there was a Range Rover on the boat built with Lucas ignition and electrical parts. Nothing could go wrong there.

From experience, Lucas systems didn't have enough power to catch on fire.

Looks like this one is a wrap, the ship has sunk.

The informal opinion seems to be an electric car battery fire(s).
