Re: Members' Old Cars - (Not 356 Porsche)
Cliff/Greg--mine is the straight 6, 4.0 litre--has 246K miles on it--new long block at 120K--been using it for deer hunting trips the past ten years--with the 5 speed manual trans and hi/low transfer makes it unstoppable. AC still works great, my son put those 33" tires on it, I liked the 29" tires better. Will probably keep it in the family.

Re: Members' Old Cars - (Not 356 Porsche)
Our six cylinder was the inline 4.0 and I only remember that the starter went and the rebuilt replacement failed quickly as did the second rebuilt unit. The third replacement lasted longer than our ownership. It took 3 to get a good one, and that was buying from the auto parts store that I owned! Embarrassing. Never had to fix anything else that I can remember. Much better machine than the Toyota Land Cruiser that my father bought new in 1978 which was one of many that had bad piston rings just after the warranty expired. They wouldn't fix it but they gave us the parts and I did the labor. Not a very Toyota like solution for a problem they knew was common.

Had that same issue with a water pump, third time was the charm. Radiator twice, power steering pump once, rear end (complete rebuild). Compared to the 356 it is easier to work on.

Fixing old British motorcycles is far preferable to fixing "tin worm" on certain Italian cars....
Just saying.....

I had a MK VI Bentley for nearly twenty years, a marvellous car, silent on the motorway at 70-80, rode as well as anything, surprisingly fast and with a handling kit and correctly valved shocks, it’s handled surprisingly well too. Not large or imposing enough for R-R types, but arguable the best car the company made and very British looking.

I went back to my roots 3 years ago and bought this poor, pimped-out "Cal look" '65 VW. I unpimped it by resetting the rear camber and replacing the butchered front torsion bars with bars I salvaged out of a '65 Porsche coupe. I added 5.5 inch Brasilian Porsche wheels, and drive it like I stole it.

I don't know about the handling but it looks "right", "period correct", unlike so many modern billet street rods.

This project has been languishing for years - I’m really not a Ford guy - but it’s finally getting some traction. Just as well it’s sat for all those years as back when we got it I would have restored it and will now preserve it - still has its original paint and original everything for that matter - all with heavy patina.
Will upgrade steering and suspension, wheels and brakes.
