1965 Coupe Project

#1 Post by John D Hammond »

First post here. This is a 65 I recently bought. I don’t know much about its history except for a kardex I just received. Originally sold by Brumos in Florida. Supposedly was in California a lot of it’s life. Looks like someone blasted it, lost interest or got diverted, it flash rusted, then someone threw the most basic components back together, just enough to roll it over to a certain Beverly Hills dealership and sell it (to me). The engine, chassis and trans numbers match but it’s missing most everything else.

You have a good start to your project if you have a solid undercarriage. Karmann or Porsche body? My 65 Porsche body was also through Brumos with 1st owner in North Carolina- 1st 3 owners actually. I am 4th owner and bought as a stripped and poorly painted project missing a lot of small parts. Interesting that you say the engine is matching, in your 1st post the c engine on the Kardex was reported to be in a 61 Notchback in 1988 in Florida.

I think that kardex you’re talking about was from a BAT auction. Not mine, however, I’m in the same predicament. My car has the engine that was written in at the top of the kardex. A COA ordered from Porsche shows the original engine as the one penciled in at the top of the kardex. I recently read that Brumos would almost daily move engines and accessories between cars to make someone happy… my vin is 219619. Is that Karmann?

Welcome to the wonderful world of 356's and restorations, John. The chassis number beginning with a "2" denotes a Karmann-bodied car. A "1" would be a Reutter. Whereabouts are you located? There might be fellow 356 owners in your area that can be of assistance with help, advice and recommendations.

Keep us posted on your progress.

My car came with these rough Weber’s. Does anyone know what the proper carbs are for this car. The car was built in late 1964, it is a regular C coupe.
