Need local help shipping a windshield from AZ to Hawaii

#1 Post by Thomas A. Arima »

The garage working on my 356C coupe broke the front windshield while trying to remove it. On December 14, they ordered a replacement on eBay from a seller in Arizona but found out that it was for local pick up only.

Could anyone help with picking it up, packing it and shipping it to Honolulu? Expenses will be picked up by the garage. TIA

Hi Thomas, welcome to the Forum! I asked Mary to direct you here because we have a lot of helpful members. If someone someone doesn’t, post again.

Also - I’m going to modify your topic slightly, to get more responses.

Why not order one from Stoddard and have it shipped?

Good suggestion Mike. I'm not sure anyone wants to get in the middle of this and incur any liability for damage to the windshield. There's got to be a reason for the supplier (un-named) to specify pick-up only.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Be aware that new windshields for the "C" can be difficult to fit, I have had problems with them and the last one had to be cut by a windshield vendor to be able to fit it. That was an additional cost of $120. Make sure the shop measures it before fitting or you may end up with the same problem again.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

It’s not a big deal for an expert to cut a windshield but they never guarantee it won’t break. If it breaks you get to pay for another one.

Supplier is probably Pilknigton Classic as they have warehouses in Ohio and Arizona. WAG.

The item # on eBay is 172324840586.

Before posting here, I checked Stoddard's website and they appeared to offer only a full set of windows for about $3000. I emailed them about just ordering the front windshield but they haven't replied.

Of course you can order just windshield from Stoddard. Either clear with correct logo https://www.stoddard.com/nla54110106-64 ... 6-nla.html or tinted https://www.stoddard.com/nla54110111-64 ... 1-nla.html Shipping will be more than the windshield.

Most eBay sellers are reasonable, Just ask to cancel, tell them the reason and I'm sure they will..
Probably need some special packaging to ship a windshield that Stoddard already has it in.
 Thanks,

Thanks for the info on Stoddard.

I'm not familiar with the site. How do you get it to show the estimated shipping cost, or shipping options? It looks like you have to buy the windshield first, then they will tell you the shipping cost after packaging it.

Also, I'm not familiar with these windshields. Why are there two types? Is one more standard than the other? Why does the clear one cost more than the tinted one? Why does the clear one say it is tinted? Are these the same items you would get if you ordered a windshield through the local Porsche dealer?

Called them. The clear one is out of stock but they are expecting a delivery from Austria in about a month. They have the tinted ones. Shipping is around $200.

So my question again is should I get the green one? Has anyone had any experience with green windshields? Are there any advantages or disadvantages in using them? Did Porsche originally offer both for the 356C?

Tinted windshield was a $19 option in 64 per Charlie White's site. Very light tint per Geoff here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=50087&p=354285&hili ... ld#p354285

Thanks. I might go with the tinted type. It looks a little dark in the Stoddard pic. I asked the Stoddard agent why the tinted one was cheaper. He said because of the much lower demand.

BTW, the Stoddard website isn’t connected to their inventory system. You could purchase an item without knowing that it isn’t in stock.
