Steering Box Leak

#1 Post by Steve Nau »

I discovered that I have a leak from my steering box. It appears to be coming from around where the steering column connects into the box.
See attached photo. I don't remember there being a seal on that part of the box. Any suggestions on the cause of this leak?

Yes. Thanks. Since posting this I searched the list of parts I bought and found that I bought this seal so maybe I botched the install.

There was an excallant article on the Samba on how to do the rebuild, but I cannot find it anymore.
I have done two of them, it is just a matter of getting it out of the car, getting the Pitman arm off and dissasssembling and reassembling, making note of where the marks are when you dissasemble.
and a great time to clean up and repaint, although yours looks nic as is.

I removed the box and see now that there is no seal where the box is leaking. I replaced both seals when I did the rebuild and they are both dry.
The leak is around the upper flange. I see that the bottom of the flange in recessed. Is there something that should be in the recess to stop the leak?
