Removal of Interior/62B Coupe to Autos International

#1 Post by robert e gwaltney »

folks, its my first time and with cold months upon us I figure i will start disassembly of my interior to send to Autos Int for restoration. Headliner and carpets are already done, i just want to remove seats, door panels, door top rails, rear top rails, rear shelf and dash pad. If any of you have been down this road pls share any YouTube videos that will help, any articles from this registry, books, best/must have tools, etc, thanks in advance robb gwaltney

PS, also want to install carpet kit in my 71 911T coupe, dynamat already installed, same type of reference sources needed, also what glue do u guys recommend, thanks, robb

I just finished removing the interior out of my 63b and it was pretty straight forward. A phillips and standard screwdriver an interior prying tool and a thin long punch was all I needed to get it all out. Dash Pad, top rails, and door cards all come off with screws mostly all visible. Door handles and window crank have a small pin in them you tap out with a punch and then remove the door cards after removing the screws. For the seats make sure the rails are clean and have some lube in them and slide the all the way forward to come out of the rails. You can remove the upper potion of the driver if needed. For the rear panels you could also use a small amount of heat to loosen any adhesive when removing them. Theres like 100 screws it seems like so keep them bagged and tagged as you go! I had mine out in a few hours plus a snack/smoke break. way easeir to remove than any modern interior with clips etc, not much to mess up. I would say the headliner and carpet were more difficult so youre good!

thanks Mark for the insight, according to local restoration shop, the engine needs to come out to remove the rear panel to access the backside of the clips, did u run into issues removing rear panel?

My car is being fully taken apart so the engine was out, good point. There will be studs on the rear panel poking through to the engine bay held on with these circular clip nuts, ( someone will chime in with their correct term) They stick through the engine insulation, you may be able to remove them with a big hassle with the engine still in but it would be tricky. A foot or two long pry fork or long needle nose maybe but it would be really tight. Depending on your set up you could drop the engine pretty easily and do it but understand not wanting to take the car apart more if you dont have to.
The only thing I can think of is being able to cut the clips off with long cutters and the pull the panel off. Best of luck bud

Robert; I don’t know if you’v found them yet, a screw behind the rubber for the rear garnish piece below the rear side glass...
I wish that I could come up with other items of interest but I can’t think of others right now.
It does help to remove the steering wheel to remove the driver seat, especially if the rails are sticky.

rear side panel clips: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=45612&hilit=side+panel+clips and rear firewall interior panel: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32529&p=261634&hili ... el#p261634 I doubt that you will be able to remove and install the rear firewall panel with the engine in. I hope that original owner 62 you bought is being kind to you.

Robb The original speed nuts were round and no longer available. If careful you may be able to save yours. Here is a link about them: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40269&p=251770&hili ... ts#p251770
