Gearbox Id help please

#1 Post by Steve Nau »

I am not sure which gearbox I have in my 56 coupe.
Can anyone tell me if it is a 519 or 644 from the attached photos?
I am told the serial number should be on the bottom spine but all that is there is 5622H4.

it is early for sure, 644 would be a an unbolted case, one piece thru the body, so 519. Others will likely give you more detail

5622 H4 is the trans number. The early 356A cars used that 519 housing with a dual-mount nose; incidentally Porsche referred to these transmissions as "644" due to the dual mounting. My records are spotty in that number range; most seem to be single-mount pre-As, but yours is in that range that begins to change to the dual-mount. When was your car built?

5622H4 is a 1955 519 transaxle. Probably from a ~May 1955 car. Originally it would’ve had a single mount nose cone as Vic mentions. The last pre-A coupes and cabriolets had transmissions in the early 7xxx numbers, and of course all of these had single-mount nose cones. The 356A introduced the dual mount.

Vic, I suspect the first dual mount transaxles would’ve been in the 7xxx range? But there would have been a number of single-mount ones in this range as the last pre-A Speedsters were produced alongside the first 356A coupes and cabriolets in late 1955. Does that sound right with your data Vic?

James'; that's pretty much what my records show.

The A series also introduced larger rear mounts with three fastener points, and a clutch shaft that extended to the RH side of the case.
This transmission doesn't have either of those A features.

Good eye, Jon! So we can assume it is an earlier case with a dual-mount nose added. The "27" and 113 part number would be from August 1954 til about March 1955. Too early to be a "644" style.
