European Heat-- Air Boxes

#1 Post by Edward Pugh »

Am reassemblying a 64 SC... European heating system, and almost ready for install.... minus the "airboxes." They boxes are the "over-engineered" ones with linkages. Metal on both is relatively good. The right side box is NOT working well, unable to get full open or close; left side is OK. Have been media blasted and primed. I'm looking for someone who has knowledge and expertise to inspect and do repairs, as necessary. Or some advice and direction. I'm trying to stay with the original set-up if possible. Thanking you in advance for responding! Nick

Think we have the same air boxes or control valves, or whatever they are called....

Mine were in pretty bad shape but on closer examination it looked like they could be saved. All the parts seemed to be there, they just needed some love. The extra bracket that is welded on is from the PO's attempt to use USA heater boxes.

Corrected spring locations, corrected the internal "flapper valve" to the "monkey motion" and then brazed this mechanism together, then installed the valves.

I really like the euro heat........ there is no better in a 356 save for the gas furnace.........

The Euro heater valves Dan shows are the earlier T-6 version. For general information, below are illustrations showing both versions of the valve. You can see the later version suggested the design for the later 911.

There were 3-different versions of Euro heat control valves; The 1st just had a hole in the flap flap to pass warm/hot air when closed off. The second version had the louvers across the bottom face, and the 3rd version has the rotary valve shown in the last photo; That one deleted the "monkey-motion" actuation which usually gets "hung-up w/grunge" over the years if not cleaned.
