HELP dropped distributor washer in 3rd piece

#1 Post by Gus Guzman »

So like a genius i dropped the washer from the distributer drive in the 3rd piece. does anyone think or know who i take this out without taking the 3rd piece apart

I tried fishing with a magnet but have not been successful. I rotated the engine on the stand and hear it but cant figure where it is.

If i have to take it apart will the crank seal be reusable?

Any help will be appreciated.

Gus

If the engine is on a stand it is easy to remove the 3rd piece. The seal is unlikely to be usable after removal to get the woodruff keys and oil slinger out of the way.

If there is no oil in the engine you could try to turn it upside down. Go counter clockwise so the washer stays on the left side of the cover. Do you have a bore scope? I think you will end up removing the cover. Place a blob of grease on the shelf that the washer sits on before installing the washer. Use a long screwdriver as a guide to drop the washer into place on the grease where it will stick. Center it with the screwdriver.

okay gets worse?? i removed the 3rd piece, but i cant find the washer. I know it fell in cause i saw it. Anyway it could have found its way to the main engine?

And the pulley seal is the one i was wondering if i could reuse?

The pulley seal should be re-usable; the oil slinger stays in the cover.
Can't find the washer? HMM. I'm trying to picture where the large hole to the main case is, and if the washer could have migrated there. Are you sure it didn't fall out when you removed the cover?

Just make sure you didn't knick the seal while removing the woodruff key.

Take the sump plate off and have a look. Maybe it's stuck to the magnet on the sump plate or on the drain plug? If you have an air hose blow behind the cam gear and all around to see if it migrated there?

Gus, I purchased a borescope that connects via WiFi directly to your phone. Pretty cheap at $35. Have used it a number of times to snake it in areas you can't get your eyes on. There are various ones on Amazon but all look pretty similar.

I just examined a case. No way for the washer to migrate to the right; where the hole into the main case is.
