1957 356 A Late T1

#1 Post by Chris Makaritis »

Hello everyone!

I am newly registered here but have been following several years now. About 5 years ago I purchased chassis number 100565. Just recently I decided to start this project. I got the Kardex and saw the car was originally silver with red interior and chrome wheels. My plan is to bring the car to as original condition as possible.
Unfortunately the engine in it is an industrial 1957 engine and the transmission from a B I believe.
I am looking for your help in your knowledge to try and bring it back to its original glory.

Initially, the body work and rust is being taken care of and I'm in search for a 1957 transmission and hopefully be able to exchange the one I have. I am in Europe and also in search of a good tried out shop to send my engine for a complete overhaul, as I am probably going to use the same one.
I took out the dash instruments and they are also not correct, so will look to parts exchange those with 57 ones, in Kms. 12V.
My wheels are with different dates and looking for a 1957 match set.

The headlights as you will see are not matched and looking to have them restored to showroom condition. Any suggestions as to where to send all chrome to be re chromed are appreciated as well.

For the wiring harness I am leaning towards http://www.ynzyesterdaysparts.com
and for the interior, http://www.worlduph.com/porsche/
Your opinion is appreciated.
The sheet metal I got from http://www.werner-kotter.de/index_035.htm
Speaking about sheet metal and body work, I have an issue as you will see with the teardrop cutouts.
Someone for whatever reason decided to destroy that. A cutout drawing to bring it back to how it's supposed to be would be very helpful.

I will have other questions for this forums experts as the project progresses.
Once again I greatly appreciate everyone's help and comments!

Welcome aboard, Chris. You have much work to do to bring that car back to original. You will have to find all the A model shift linkage to hook to a 1957 transmission. Your 12V instruments are obviously adapted from a 911?
But the car is nice because it looks like you have the original floor.
Good luck.

Hi Vic,
Thanks for the reply. I have a very long uphill road.....
Regarding the instruments I don't really know where they are from. They came with the car.
If I can find someone to parts exchange with a 57 set, it would be great!
As for the transmission, any leads to start looking for the proper linkage would be appreciated.
So far I only got the correct A T1 shifter.
Original floor.....unfortunately I can only keep the back part. Front part is too rusted....

Chris I don't know where you are in European but speak to Paul/Mike Smith at PRS (http://www.prs356.co.uk/). They are based in the UK and only work on 356s. Plus they are pretty generous with their advice. Mike is good with transmissions so you should be able to get the right linkage from him. Plus they are known as good engine builders. Another good place for 356s is Roger Bray Restoration (also in the UK) . Mark who runs the parts departments knows these cars and Roger has been restoring 356 for quite a few years.

However, that said maybe you have someone more local in mind?

Hi Neil,

Thank you for the advice, appreciate it.
I am in Greece. I will check with PRS and Roger Bray.
My goal is to parts exchange if possible my transmission with a 1957 one and send my engine
for complete overhaul with the proper parts.

Your restoration undertaking and remarkable work and progress, with rather limited 356 resources in Greece, is indeed admirable. Carry on!
