Scott
Forgot to mention I own a 912 also. It is at the cottage so it is kind if out of mind. It needs brake work too, etc.

Hey Dave nice to meet you. I also have a 912. When the dust settles would be great to hook up.

Working on getting the light buckets in. These were a tight fit that needed some heat and adjustment. The wire conduit bracket was also a poor fit. Wish they had included some extra length for the tubes. Needed to cut apart and rebuild.

Scott--if you ever want to sell the 912 (or 356), please let me know. beautiful work!
See my 1957 speedster "backyard find" story in September\October 356registry magazine. I am always looking for an old Porsche to write stories about or interesting stories about an old Porsche to relay for the magazine.

Knocking down some high spots with concentrated dime size heat - a little dolly work and quenching.

Time to cut the hole for the centre hood gas filler. I First had to find the centre point on the hood to drill but also take into account the angle of the hood (about 8 degree off level). Using a cut wooden disc and and drilled hole to hold a pencil that with some pressure could slide up and down I put a dab of whiteout on the tip to mark the centre point when I slowly closed he hood. Also angled the pencil at about 8 percent slope.

I then cut out two wooden circle discs with a router at about 4 3/4 for a snug fit around the gas cap. I indexed the wooden discs so that when I sandwiched them between the hood they would be aligned with four holes. Before drilling I also drew a number of circles so I could position it correctly. Using the upper disc I passed a drill though the holes in the wooden disc then and through the hood (four holes) then bolted the top and bottom disc together snuggly.

With the discs sandwiched tightly between the hood I then slowly cut out a slight undersized hole to provide 1/8 to 1/4 inch lip. Then I slowly tapped with a couple of shaped hammers ( and dolly for support) until the extra metal was rolled over. If I do this again I would use a harder wood as all of the tapping against the ply soften the edge somewhat more than I would have preferred.

Next step was to install filler neck. So I made up a jig to hold the filler extension and gas cap to position the four hole grab handle. My buddy bronzed it on and a little clean up and grinding the seam - turned out well. Next trick was to figure out the height and angle of the filler neck extension. Took some math and challenges to cut the angle and then sneak up on the height. I think I am going to go with the gas cap flush with the hood. I have seen examples with it sitting lower.

Settled on final position and angle then with some magnets and a couple of tack welds held it in place. Then the full lip was bronzed in place.

A first class job! Excellent attention to detail. I'm sure once this car is back on the road, all of the labor expended will be well worth it.

Re: 1960 356B Coupe restoration/filler neck

#90 Post by Michael Foster »

Love the thru hood filler look but having a solid neck strikes me as being unsafe.

If car suffers hit on front or side enough to crumple the front hood or move it could cause gas tank to rupture, spilling gas and

susceptible to possible catastrophic result. Would be much safer having upper part of neck with cap a separate part connected by

rubber/fiber type sleeve which would allow upper part to separate from tank without rupturing it.
