Rehashing this thread....
Could someone please tell me if the black U like piece that sits toucing the black knob and hooks around the shaft that the knob connects to - is this piece steel or vinyl? If its steel, can it be purchased anywhere? Hope this makes sense.....
I am glad you did rehash this thread--the seat popper stopper is exactly what I need. If they are open on Saturday I will order a set tomorrow.

Does the driver's seat suffer the same fate? If so I will do both at the same time.

thanks,

Also -- why does the passenger side seat have the knob and the catch to hold the seat back in place and keep it from tilting forward, but not the driver's side? This hasn't made sense to me during my restoration.

the theory is that the driver would be sitting in the drivers seat whilst the car is in motion therefore eliminating the need to restrain the seat.

Got help us in an accident though!

I think it had more to do with money.
Porsche realized that the seat back restraint on the driver's seat was not specifically required by the DOT along with the "safety rear view mirror", so they eliminated those 2 safety items and saved a couple of dollars on each vehicle produced. They weren't put back into their cars until the 1968 model year when they were required by the DOT.

My hinges will need rebuilding as they are 'self' reclining...

Do I need just the popper stopper or will I also need the plastic covers as well? I guess my question is, does the plastic cover serve a purpose or is it purely cosmetic ?

There is a rubber band that wraps over the shaft of the knob and other lever. It is missing in our photo. It is not illustrated in any parts catalog nor workshop manual.

Hey thanks Brad. Good to know.

Is there a definitive thread or text that details the rebuilding proceedure and ALL of the parts required? The parts manual is rather basic.... And after reading the various threads im more confused than ever.

Cheers

https://porsche356registry.org/article/104 Dan there were different details to the hinges for year to year changes. Which type (year) do you have?https://porsche356registry.org/article/235

Daniel-
If it helps you any, I removed my hinges and completely took them apart for new chrome. I took photos of the disassembled parts and it might be useful for you to view the photos. I haven't sent them to the shop yet for chrome, as I've been sending other parts in.
Anyway, you can see the photos in the "BLOG" section of my website. I think you'll have to hit "previous page" a couple of times as the post was made back in January.
My car is a C.

Good luck with the project.

The flap is actually rubber and could be fabricated easily.
