Carrera Oil Thermostat

#1 Post by Thomas Laubscher » Sat Mar 27, 2021 6:40 pm

Hello

I'm wondering how the Carrera Behr Oil Thermostat is working. Does anyone know more about it and hast maybe details about it?
Mine is apart and I'm not sure if there was a problem with it when someone else worked on it.

Here some pictures.

Hi Tom
i don't see the bulb. You should have the innards of this coolant thermostat a bulb and pin they appear to be missing, send it to me and i will provide the parts and test it. there are different versions and there might be some modifications needed.

sorry Tom i did not see that you were in Europe you could buy a new one from Hofman(pretty pricey but cheap compared to an engine overhaul) Karl Hlock or Peter Iverson may be able to help you.

Hi Jacques

Oohh thanks for the great help! I thought there is something missing, but couldn't find an illustration. So I think I would only need this bulb. Do I understand that this part is available somewhere?

I have another thermostat which is not apart. So I'm not interested to buy a new one.

How do you do the test?

Tom

I think the active element is called a "wax motor" and I think there is a 911 part that can be made to work.
You can test the motor by putting it in hot water, record the temperature at which it moves, just as you test water thermostats.
However if you want to know if that assembly works properly, then you might heat the whole thing in an oven, recording the temperature with an infra red heat gun, and testing the flow through the ports as it heats.

Or it might suffice to assemble the unit in the car after ascertaining that the wax motor functions, and feeling the heat in the oil lines as the engine warms up.

Hi Harlan

I found another replacement part from the manufacturer MEYLE. I'll have a look to it and also what you said the part for early 911's.

I'll go to disassemble and clean my second thermostat and go for a test as you described.

Jacques, is a piece of some common water-cooled car thermostat useable, like what you pictured?

Hi
there is no standard size you can use a different sleeve/spring to compensate and some if you change the pin you ruin it. even the Behr units are not made alike.

Hmm, sounds not promising to get a standard replacement part. So I still could send you the unit and you have the right part Jacques?
If yes I'll write you directly.

I'm using an early 911 wax bulb taken from a case. I got it from Jim B. at EASY years It opens a few degrees hotter but very acceptable.
