4Cam Carrera Tachometers what year what engine type

#1 Post by Nigel Cousins »

Can the community shed light on what Tachometer face designs link with what engine type. I have this one, but would like to understand how many designs were used over the
4Cam years.

Tim, when the tachometer was serviced/ refurbished with a new bezel,
Speedycables here in the UK unfortunately sprayed over the date.
Was either late 56 or early 57.

Late 356A Carrera. Face may have been changed. Look for part number in the very upper part of the face. If no number, face has been changed. If instrument has been serviced lately, then likely the face has been changed with a decal/sticker.

The only small part number is a 6 above 4500 mark.

How many different 4Cam tachometer designs were produced?
This style was for sale a few years back,

I’ve not been able to find any info on the different versions.

The 7000 RPM red line didn't go with a plain bearing engine so pre 58.

Thanks Brad just looked my Johnson book is 1992 it lists the redline points but no clear correlation with engine type.

I like the tachs with the green stripes beginning at 4,000 RPM, the red stripes beginning at 6,000 RPM, and the red line at 7500 RPM. lugging a Carrere down to 2,000 RPM makes no sense to me, nor does beginning the cautionary red stripes below 6,000.

I'm surprised by the Spyder tach with no redline, and presumably no tell tale. Most professional race drivers tended to over rev the engines, and race managers fought this tendency. I doubt that Spyder engines reved to 10,000 RPM. One day, in the late 1960s, I attended the tear down of a Skip Barber driven, Auto Engineering sponsored Spyder which had broken a roller con rod. They were saying that the factory Spyders were turning 8,200, and thought that theirs should have done the same. I don't remember the tach in the car.

Harlan,
I’ve seen two 1959’s with green from 4,000 to 7,000 and then red from 7,000 to 7,500.

Have you ever seen those?

Does anyone know which tacho is the right one for a 58 Carrera GT with 692/0 engine?
Mine has one with red zone starting from 7000 but am not sure if this is correct.
