A, pre-A Horsepower

#1 Post by Lloyd Keigwin » Sat Jan 29, 2022 7:14 pm

All,
We've got a serious blizzard happening here (Cape Cod) and I cannot get out to the barn to fact check, but I believe Henry Elfrink showed in his tables that the 1500N and 1600N engines had the same horsepower (50?). I find this a little puzzling because the later engine had greater displacement, and better heads and inlet manifolds. Comments?
Thanks, Lloyd Keigwin

Lloyd: I'm in Dedham (same blizzard) and tried to email you but I can't. Send me an email and I'll show you what I've got in my '55 to get it up to speed.
My email is tlc356@verizon.net.

Lloyd, the type 527, Porsche's original 1500 from 1951-52, also had 60 hp like the later 616/1, but used a Hirth roller crank and had larger 26mm (vs 24mm) venturis on the Solex 32 PBI compared to the type 546 and 546/2 of 1952 and 1954, respectively. It got all that extra power via a 500 rpm higher redline.
