Cylinder tin on the right is correct

Middle generator strap with the louvres

Those pushrods will work fine.

Checking some crankshafts to use instead of the roller crank in my 3 piece 528/2 1500s engine. (the non counter weighted - with all 50mm mains journals)
and came across 2 different shapes of Crank shaft.
I think the 356A/B is on the right , but what is the lh crank shaft from ? (same journal sizes)

That is the type that would have come in an early engine.

As Vic says the crank on the left is early, pre-A Normal and 356A, crank on the right is 356B and would be my choice as it is stronger and, I believe, will fit with no issues.

Question to the engine experts. Porsche changed the locations of oiling holes/slots in the case, shell bearings and crankshafts over time. Is it OK to use these later 356B era cranks on the early engines, as long as one matches the correct shell bearings to the case in question?

James-
I sure hope a B crank with 912 rods is OK! That's what I have...

You will have to check for clearance of the rods inside the case. Might have to do some filing of the case.

Thanks for the tip Vic.

And yeah Nathan, your engine was build by Pellow, right? He never used early crankshafts or rods on his builds.

I guess the bearings then are the only challenge on the 2-piece cases. Are the bearings on the early 3-piece cases and the 2-piece cases the same in terms of slots and holes? Or is it a mix? Some work, some do not?

Yes, Harry Pellow built my Hot Rod. (Apologies to Ministry). The engine has bits of everything through the years, but I'm slowly getting all the correct parts. I'm kind of glad I have a later fan housing with the thermostat bracket, because I can save the HCP Research sticker for posterity when I refinish the proper shroud in something other than gloss black powder coat. Happy to have an original oil filler/vent for reference for the proper black!

So this question is in regards to correct Air Filters for pre-a 528/2 , 3 piece 1500s Engine
So I know
-Carby hole should be about 66mm opening for the Solex 40 PICB (32 PBI had aprox 51mm opening)
-Should have 2 lines of German text under Knecht Logo (4 lines of Bi-Lingual text would mean it comes of a 356A )

BUT ,
-I have seen the 2 lines of Text wider than the Knecht logo, and also the 2 lines of Text smaller than the Knecht Logo, so what would be correct
and
- what should the width and height be. According to Brett Johnsons book , they should be about 115mm wide and 81mm high (356A with 40 PICB is 130mm X 81)

Another confusing bit is the 1955 catalogue (thanks James) lists 40PICB air filter as 527.08.801 and the 1956 356A lists the same part Number ???

Hope someone knows what size it should be and I am open to purchasing a pair, or swapping for a very good Pair of 356A Knechts to suit 40PICB (4 lines of Bi-Lingual text )

Thanks
Rex

Porsche's part number didn't change. It was a Knecht mesh filter that fit the Solex 40 carb, first used on the 527 engine, hence the 527.xx.xxx part number.

Meanwhile, the details of how Knecht actually made this filter that met Porsche's specs did change over time, not reflected in Porsche part numbers.

Yes, the Knecht logo changed sizes over time, though it's not clear to me there's a strong pattern.

The Knecht filters for Solex 40 (and Zenith) never changed sizes as far as I know. They are always ~80mm tall, ~130mm diameter. The ones for Solex 32 did change sizes.

Oh, and all the 528 and 528/2 Knecht I've seen from late 1952 onward look like this.
