Anyone have a picture of the routing of the choke cable from the back of the tunnel to the left carb? It is on a 53 cab. Particularly, how it goes from under the car to the engine bay through or under the front engine tin.
Thanks, Bob

Re: 1953 Choke Cable Routing
see the images below. Note also Paul Christensen's article on cleaning guide tubes. There seems to be some discussion on whether to use gasket material to block off the enrichment valve or to check for flatness on the enrichment valve cover. Also note that the other carburetor is set in a static position. Part of the art of running a pre A engine such as these is to balance the expansion of the engine and the throttle adjust with the right amount of enrichment... I will defer to some of the other experts to offer their opinions on the process of adjustments...

Paul's comment reads "the cable is probably (loose) or has "P" clips inside the tunnel". On my '53 cabriolet the choke cable tube extends the full length of the tunnel exiting as described between the accelerator rod and clutch cable.

Thank you both, just what I needed. I was hoping that the cable didn’t have to be removed from the engine bay when pulling the engine, but since it goes through the front tin, it must be pulled out.

Bob simply disconnect the cable from the carb as you remove the motor the cable will pull out and remain . at least that's how it works on my 55

Re: 1953 Choke Cable Routing
I always cut the cable in the tunnel and continue with a fake end from the engine rear across the disrtibutor to the left carb.
So it looks original. Without function because the choke never closes correctly in 3 meters distance.
And we do not drive our cars in deep winter months.
And 356A + cars did not have a choke any more. We simply don't need it.
Advice: a good thing to do too is, to put a plain paper gasket between the choke mecanism and the carb housing. So no false air can come in the carb any more.

Re: 1953 Choke Cable Routing
So, I'm in the process of replacing my bowden tube. I got the VW choke cable from Wolfsburg west, but its about 10 inches too short. I suppose I can splice two together and clamp them in the tunnel, but is there another source for the proper cable?
Thanks for all the input above, its very helpful

Hi, All.
Rick/Others: have you ever had difficulty getting the old housing out of the tunnel tube? Any stories/thoughts/suggestions?
Thanks, Jim
