Re: Mann Oil Filter Housing
Chasing the elusive Mann oil filter: An increasingly common misconception that deserves comment and perspective.
IMHO let us try to maintain a clear idea of history concerning OEM oil filters on 1954 and 1955 P-356 engines. The majority of those engines were factory-equipped with the familiar orange and black Fram bypass oil filter of one design or another. During the early 1950s the green Mann filter was an add-on accessory item that could be retrofitted to any 356 Porsche engine originally built without an external oil filter. Yes, from time to time back then there were rare exceptions to the production routine. We have all seen photos of those filters from other manufacturers. But today, when scrounging around trying to pull together parts from different sources to build an original-looking engine for your 1954 or 1955 P-356 car, bear in mind the original engine delivered with your car most likely was fitted with a Fram oil filter.

Re: Mann Oil Filter Housing
I agree with Don that most early engines in the '54/'55 era had the Fram filters with the top decal calling out the C3 filter element. However I posted before a page from a somewhat mysterious LISTE document which was a list of part groupings which apparently could be ordered as a group. I don't know if this was a factory document or a distributor document. Anyway one of the LISTE items was a listing for adding an oil filter to 2-pc case engines and it lists Porsche part numbers for Fram, Mann and Knecht filters. Attached below:

Re: Mann Oil Filter Housing
Alan, Not an expert on this. Would the 900 series parts numbers seen indicate that this is a later, as in not 50's, list? I am sure somebody will be ale to tell us when the 900 series numbers were introduced for hardware but I believe it was somewhere early 60's. If so, perhaps at that time more options were available.

Re: Mann Oil Filter Housing
Joris, This document has nothing to indicate when (or by who) it was issued. Looking through it I see references to 356B and to super 90 as well as RSK and 741 transmissions, so it can be no earlier than the 60's. Also of interest is LISTE 23, which is for "Oil Filter Optional Equipment for 3 pc crankcase", and this LISTE only includes the 546.07.826 oil filter which per LISTE 22 is the Fram filter. But of course what is really odd is that they list this as optional equipment as I am sure all 3-pc case engines came with oil filters standard.

The publication was issued in 1964 and lists all previous part numbers that were converted to 900 series numbers.
Brad R. will know if that was the year the part number transformation took place, or some time prior to 1964.
