Next thing made re-appearance in todo list. I
Background: did go through this a long time ago and car has not been driven but been under restoration for years. All new wheel bearing, all new seals, correct spacers in place. Some oil is seeping through still.
Questions:
1) Should there be paper gasket under the bearing retainer or not? Seal kits do provide one but at least in VW it was not used until before '65 originally
2) Is my bearing retainer of correct type? (left on in the image)
3) Does someone have exploded view of the pre a rear axle in hand? I do have a shop manual with image but it is out of reach at this time.

Re: Rear wheel bearing & seal
1. No paper in a 356.
2. Left one is correct; 356 and early VW. Right one is later VW only.
3. pre-A is same as any drum-brake 356 through 1963 as far as the bearing and axle arrangement.

Aki,
Do NOT use Item 17 out of a VW Seal kit - It is Too Soft
Buy a proper Porsche Kit or a separate Washer from one of the respected Porsche Advertisers

Here is the hardened washer Mike is referring to.

Do not use the "soft" one that comes in VW based kits.
