I cannot comment on the pre-A cars but I have done extensive research on this and own a very original A car fitted with factory fogs. As far as I have been able to tell a relay was never installed in conjunction with fog lights on the A cars. This practice started with the B's

Victor, this is the first I’ve seen of a fog light relay on a pre-A. Did your ‘55 have factory fogs? And is the relay original to the car? You’ll be able to tell via the date code on it.

And, on the subject of factory fog lights. The relays apparently did not start with the T-5 Bs as my July 60 build car with factory installed fog lights has no relay and no harness provision for one.

Jaimes the foglights are original to the car, we put the relay in to protect the integrity of the wiring.

Thanks for the various feedbacks :

Conclusion : 1. Fog lights on Pre A cars were installed without a relay
2. It might be wise to add a relay for protection

May be of interest : the Bosch NOS LE 105 fog lights came with the box and a instruction to use relay : SE 21/1 as pictured above

Except for some of the very first cars?? and the late A overrider cars I do not believe that Bosch fog lights were ever installed by the factory. They always used Hella's

Same goes for the headlights... they went straight through the headlight switch - no relay. Also wise to install a relay for those.

Victor,

Did you look into substituting LED bulbs in the fog lights as an alternative way to protect the wiring?

Some of the early Repair Manual diagrams have a relay shown. Edit - I believe this is a late 53 or 54 Wiring diagram below
The relay shown (NIR), and note that there is a relay part number in the Legend - SEZ 9/17 G 2a Bosch, appears to be a normally closed relay and opens when the high beams are selected. This works the same as the later fog light relays installed in B and C (and later cars, for that matter), but it is a different relay from the B and C cars.
Like Joris, I have never seen one of these relays, neither in a car nor at the Lit Meet or other swap meets.
This same ghosted in relay is present in later factor diagrams as well. From the drawing it appears to be a switch and relay combination.
NI - Nebelleuchte (Fog Light)
PS - the other relay which is also ghosted in in the Light Flash relay

Thanks for pointing that relay out Greg. Never noticed it before.

This diagram is from the 1954 Porsche Service Manual, and it shows the electrics of a mid-1955 pre-A coupe. One can tell from the offset-screw fuse box and its jumper layout.

And don’t ask about a late-1955 wiring diagram appearing in a Jan 1954 Service Manual. Apparently the publication of this was delayed and delayed.
