1500 Super Oil Filler Canister Photos
Hello Dear Friends, Is there a kind soul who owns an early (1953) oil filler canister for a 1500 Super engine and who is willing to take a few photos and a couple of measurements of the canister assembly? I have devoted at least 100 hours to locating a canister but without any luck.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom, Sure, let me know what you need. (As an aside the small propane cylinders are almost the identical diameter as the filler canister.)

Hi Tom, yeah what can we measure?
75mm diameter
93mm seam to seam can height
18mm tubing
The 1952-53 canisters were 3-piece. The 1954 ones were 2-piece. Not sure precisely when the switch was. Late 1953?

Here's a factory photo of the canister from engine P-40240 from early 1953. You can see the can has a separate top and bottom. Also a period photo of P-40106 from the beginning of 1953. Same 3-piece canister.
The 1954 can was a spun, 2-piece item, with only a separate top part. See color photo below.
Tom Niedernhofer had some of the 1952-53 ones made up a while back.

The 1954 ones have been reproduced as well

Hope this helps.

And oh look, my past self seems to think the change occurred earlier in 1953.

I'll have to figure out how I came to that conclusion. =D
EDIT: Yeah, i'm wrong about the early changeover in the above thread. The 2nd engine is not a good reference. All we know is that in mid-1953 the 3-piece was used and by early 1954 the 2-piece was used. Not much more. There's a factory photo from ~22 May 1953 that shows 528 engines with the 3-piece breather, so that's probably the latest confirmed date.

Hi Albert, this is the photo of the bare cabriolet chassis (no body) in the yard, and it is from early 1953, so no oil filter canister. Those didn't become standard until June 1953.Albert Haefner wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 4:49 am interesting details on the factory pic!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! The information and photos were exactly what I needed. FYI the guy in Germany who is reproducing the assembly is having a very difficult time producing anything. First promise in March was April and so far nothing yet and I need to move on.
Thanks again.

Re: 1500 Super Oil Filler Canister Photos
The saga continues! I have acquired a near perfect and original two piece canister but I need the three piece unit. I believe that my metal guy can convert the two piece, however, is there anyone who is willing to trade, I will pay all postage and shipping?
Thanks,
Tom
Thanks,
Tom

Did you contact Ray at Speedwell USA? He has made these before, including the 3-piece version.

They are the ones pictured in Tom N.'s ad that I linked to above.

Re: 1500 Super Oil Filler Canister Photos
Is there a difference between the fillers if the engine is a 1500 normal?

The type 527 and 546 motors used the VW filler. Part number 115 471b. Rubber gasket and retaining spring were VW parts as well.

Re: 1500 Super Oil Filler Canister Photos
Thanks, James. I tried to Google what that looks like, so I still am uncertain about what I should be looking for. Can you direct me to a picture or is it the one pictured above?
