Removing early door lock tumblers
I need to get the lock tumblers apart to get chromed. I have the early drift pin handles I assume I have to drill out the pin. But before I did this curious if anyone has any tips.

Tip #1 - send them to Rick Albro in Ridgecrest, CA.Tony Proasi wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 3:35 pm I need to get the lock tumblers apart to get chromed. I have the early drift pin handles I assume I have to drill out the pin. But before I did this curious if anyone has any tips.
I took one of my spare cylinders apart a few years ago and still haven't found the spring that shot out of it.
Rick will take your cylinders apart; evaluate and give you a rundown on what needs fixed or repaired; have everything chrome plated at Christensen's; make new keys for you and put them back together looking like museum pieces.
Tip #2 - see tip #1

Your handles were matched and original to your '51 doors. Rick will make them like new and what ever time it takes will be well worth it!

Re: Removing early door lock tumblers
Throw the tumbler in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner ( $15 on ebay. Don't drill the screw out use a very mall eyeglass screwdriver to remove the screw, assuming that is a screw type and not a pin type . That one looks like a screw type the pin ones have a smaller hole if it is a pin you may need to drill a small hole to the left or right of it and get a pick and slowly try walking it out .i don't think the pinned ones were ever intended to be taken apart , you have a 50/ 50 shot of drilling the hole on the correct side of the pin to try and move the pin out. Drill slow and feel for a change in material the pin is hard the casting is soft if you hit hit a hollow void before you hit something hard you are on the wrong side of the pin, drill the other side .. that is assuming it is a pinned lock and not a screwed lock fyi the pins don't go in straight in the pin run in in a diagonal line intersecting between 5 and 8 o'clock.. 11and 3 all depend how you look at it .. pins ones are rare i've only come across 4 or five and i have restored probably 40 to 50 handles over the years. ( pinned one's suck )

Ned
Thanks for the tips. I got the pins out with you and Ricks help.
Spencer
Rick does great work I just wanted to get everything to the chrome shop before the end of the week. Hoping the car will be in primer by the end of the month.
A picture of the pins for future reference.

You, Rick and Ned have steadier hands & sharper eyes than mine. I'll stick to drilling oil wells where you can really bang some iron around and not hurt it

I think the thread viewtopic.php?f=13&t=35945 contains a description of the disassembly process. Perhaps the dialog should be updated with a condensed version of the email string between tony and others...
