Looking good. Plan on doing similar on my 53. Going to shelf the split case trans but instead of your set up I'm going to run a built VW trans.
Rancho Transmission in So Cal has this nose cone so it will bolt right in. Just will need to add some added support for the front of the trans.
Check out this nose cone,

Yeah, we've seen that. I visit The Samba frequently. I also have a '71 Bay window that I have been doing rust repair on. Lee and I have been diagnosed with MADD disease. Mechanical Attention Deficit Disorder. That means anything with a motor, wheels, or mechanical moving parts can be on our radar. On any givin day we can be jacked up on Porsche's, Hot Rod's, Vw's, ( We have a finished '57 oval in Coral red ) Trains, motorcycles.etc, etc,
The VW trans isn't all a bad idea, ( we will wait for Vic to chime in on that comment ) The reason for us was time, and the fact we had a good trans plus donor parts for the conversion. So we went with that. If you use that setup there should be no welding on the beam, and depending on your hoop/motor mount set-up you may not have to do much modifying for the rear mount. The VW guys make all sorts of gears so you can juggle R&P and gear ratios to duplicate the factory ratios, or tailor things to have a taller 4th. Please do a Step by step thread on how you do it and how you like it. With 356 trans becoming so darn expensive this could be a more cost effective way around that.

In the glove box we found this neat little distributor cap. I am sure its aftermarket like J. C. Whitney or such, but seems to be well built. Seen them for VW with wires coming out the top like late stuff. Has anyone seen these for the early cars???

Hi Guys
I know this thread kinda fizzled out. I am not very tech savvy and having to shrink files to upload/down load etc,etc got the best of me and i just stopped.
I Got permission to post this video. It was made by Jameel Abraham with pics and video shot by Lee and I, Jameel and his brother Fj ( Father John ) and good friend and one of the best wood hand plane makers Konrad Sauer from Canada. The plan was for Jameel and Fj set off several days ahead of us in their SC's to visit friends in northern California and drop down to Danville to meet us, then caravan to Monterrey.
Warning: there is some inside jokes in this video that you will not get ( like Jameel's starter dying when they get to the salt flats requiring a push to start ) But its fun to watch and if you've never been there its a good look inside that magical weekend.
Cheers Neil

Thats the plan! You and your brother show that cars are supposed to be driven! I took this photo today 70 years of tire development.

Fun video. I kinda scanned it, but happened to watch one clip with Walt heading down the corkscrew at Laguna Sega. That was just awesome Porsche goodness!

Tony, I love it!! Kinda like the saying "Remember when the tires were skinny and the drivers were fat"
Jason, Back in '98 we took Lee's rusty '59 to holiday and took it on the track as well. That was the 1st time we'd been there and the corkscrew never disappoints you at the elevation change! Maybe we should ask Vic if he ever gets tired of running there!

Loved seeing this, proves the world is small. Participated in Monterey/Pebble event couple of times (86 & 98) with the Sauter roadster. brought back all memories of those trips. (including letting my at that time 16 y.o. son drive our minivan tow vehicle at 105 mph over the salt flats) and the first time I dove off the corkscrew (got comfortable after the local pros clued me to blindly aim at a certain V in the tree line and the road would be there (even if you couldn't see it)
But I moved on to woodworking and would like to give a shout out to Jameel, who is famous legend in the woodworking hobby. I've met Jameel & bought a few of his items. see if you can post picture of the musical instruments he makes.
Made my day, thanks and you all be safe

Thanks Ray, great story and thanks for sharing it. I must admit I have watched this video waaay to many times but such great memories of that trip and Jameel captured it so well!
Yes Jameel and his brother are super talented guys and just great down to earth Iowa boys! I will post some of his work and also a couple planes by Konrad. I am not a wood guy, cant weld it back together when its too short, but I do like to look at the beautiful work these guys can do.

Ray here's a few of one of Jameel's Ouds he's done. The craftsmanship is unreal, when it comes to wood I am a rough carpentry type of guy

Neil, with your skills in steel I am quite sure you could make the switch to wood. I am not of that highest level but I speak both steel and wood, the skills are not exclusive.
