It does look like you have correctly identified the two piece case engines. The engine with a distributor cap on it looks like a 912 which is rather similar to an SC.

Hey Lee, you DO have some of the old motors! People will be contacting you now. Sorta like a Storage Wars episode that turned out good.

The 616/36 and 616/39 are 912 engines, so you won't find the numbers in a 356 engine list.

Thanks for the ID on the 912 motors. Much appreciated!

Anyone know about the Blank Serial # plate on a 2 piece Case?

Someone told me that Porsche at one time sold "replacement" Cases....and left the Serial# off those Cases.

Can anyone verify that bit of information...?

Does the blank replacement case have a drilled hole for a oil return line on the face of the generator stand? If not. it is likely a late 25 or 36hp VW replacement case.

What are the 3 sets of two-digit numbers cast into the right side of the generator stand? If unreadable, there should be a similar set of numbers on the left half of the case, next to the oil pump cavity.

What are the part numbers cast into each half of the case, just below the pushrod tube holes?

At the top of the generator stand, there is a boss cast into the case next to the oil filler hole. Is it drilled or undrilled?

Can anyone help me identify Engine #6?

It is not on the Stoddard list. It is a 2 piece case with a 5 digit #

It is Serial # P-24306 Has a + sign stamped....and 2933 over 506. Additionally it has a large U type symbol with very tiny 77????

Matching #s 354 / 354

Thanks Jan.

To keep things organized....this is Engine #6

I will check out all the info you posted....and get back to you.

Did find a pic...and it looks like it does have an a return line drilled in the face of the generator stand.

Back to Engine # 6.....It looks like I miss-read the serial number

It is possible it is a Serial # P-21306.......and not P-24306.

If so....that fits into the Stoddard List.....

That would make it a 1953 1300cc motor type 506.

ZUNDFOLGE means FIRING ORDER and will be on all your cases. "Jugs" or "cylinders" are not really important at this point because they are probably all worn out, and only cast iron ones can be re-bored to be useful. Late heads, the ones you want (if they have no cracks), have 38mm intake and 34mm exhaust valves. Earlier heads have 31mm exhaust valves, but might still have value if in decent shape. A lot of those matching #'s have no real significance except to show that all 3 pieces go together, and that is important. The #616/36, 39 etc. are engine type numbers, so you do seem to have a bunch of fairly valuable late engine "projects". By the way, 2-piece motor cases refer to very early '50s motors and are quite valuable today; I don't think you have any of those. In 1955 Porsche developed what we call the "3-piece" motor, with a separate front cover where the actual serial number is stamped. You've gotten yourself into a pretty big project that is going to take a bit of work (there's that dirty word) to realize what should be a very nice profit in these Covid days.

Thanks very much for the info Craig.

I'll have to get out my micrometer and check out the heads.... Good or bad, I would like to know to what type of engine they belong.... Much Appreciated!

And thanks again on the 912 engine info.

And on 1955 being the transition from 2 piece to 3 piece motor cases.

Hi Jan.....if you can help me out a bit more on ID-ing the "replacement case." There is also a Crank Shaft in the case...but a bit rusty.

First...I should mention that I found a bit of damage....not a hole in the case....but a cracked, pushed up area. Made pics of this... The Case looks magnesium to me...don't know if that can be TIG welded...and repaired.

Took some pics...

It is a 36hp VW case, cast on 12 and 15 November 1954, and modified as a replacement 356 case. Not sure if case modifications were by Porsche or an outside machine shop.

The 8-dowel crank should be 356.

The engine threw #3 rod at some point, hence the cracked case.
