Does the blank replacement case have a drilled hole for a oil return line on the face of the generator stand? If not. it is likely a late 25 or 36hp VW replacement case.

What are the 3 sets of two-digit numbers cast into the right side of the generator stand? If unreadable, there should be a similar set of numbers on the left half of the case, next to the oil pump cavity.

What are the part numbers cast into each half of the case, just below the pushrod tube holes?

At the top of the generator stand, there is a boss cast into the case next to the oil filler hole. Is it drilled or undrilled?
Hi Jan.....if you can help me out a bit more on ID-ing the "replacement case." There is also a Crank Shaft in the case...but a bit rusty.

First...I should mention that I found a bit of damage....not a hole in the case....but a cracked, pushed up area. Made pics of this... The Case looks magnesium to me...don't know if that can be TIG welded...and repaired.

...
It is a 36hp VW case, cast on 12 and 15 November 1954, and modified as a replacement 356 case. Not sure if case modifications were by Porsche or an outside machine shop.

The 8-dowel crank should be 356.

The engine threw #3 rod at some point, hence the cracked case.

[/quote]

Yea...figured it threw a rod...

Thanks ....you know your technology!

Do you think is it salvageable....... Any use to anyone?

Cool cases Leland! Yeah, #1 and #6 are genuine Porsche cases built on the 25hp VW case. They are factory built. Both 1953.

The un-numbered case is a factory replacement case from 1954, again built on a VW case, this time the 36hp case.

You can tell which cylinders and heads go with these cases because the bolt spacing will be different. I.e. only cylinders and heads appropriate for these cases will slide over the head bolts. Spigot for the cylinder is sized differently as well. Later cylinders and heads won't fit.

I'm interested in #1 engine!

Very good information James. Thanks!

I was struggling with this very point today.....and your information makes it much easier.....

I had written the following:

Doing a bit more work....going over the engines and cases with a bit more detail... Found some more damage inside one of the Cases... evidently didn't write down with one...! Not the 1300c.

Thanks to those that send me emails.... Appreciate the suggestions and offers to help identify parts.

My life has been upset a bit by all this....and doing the best I can right now.

Currently trying to figure out if any of the Jugs fit the Pre 1955 2 part cases....or if they are all later Jugs.

Then want to figure out if any of the Heads fit the early engine Jugs...Cases.

I found that the 1300cc Case has a crank inside...but no bearings. ( wondered why it was so heavy...)

So...it seems to me that it would be good to try to match up any Jugs and Heads and such that would go with this engine.

Same with the 1500cc engine....

Same with the later engines...

It looks to me that the Hole in the Case where the Jugs fit.....is 8.5mm for the early cases and 9mm for the later cases.... Don't know if this is right.

I found 4 Jugs that obviously had smaller and different fins....than the other Jugs......so thought they might fit the 1300cc engine....but by measurement....they don't. Have to recheck this tomorrow.

So.....obviously....It will be much easier to just check for bolt patterns and fit. Will try to get that done tomorrow.

Also want to open up the 1300cc type 506 engine and take the crank out...as it is just loose in there with no bearings. Not good!

James....if you have any information on how to identify if the Crankshaft inside the 1300cc is correct...that would be great.

Yea....lots of interest in the type 506 1300cc Case....several members have contacted me about it. I guess it is one of the best items in the hoard...

Also, today, I found out that one of the other early 2 piece cases has some internal damage ....crack. Looks like the flange for the #1 cylinder Jug....was not a complete cast....and looks like it threw a rod there....and cracked inside the case. But haven't opened it up to see how bad. ( not the 1300cc one...)

On the 1953 1500 super....365S Slit Case engine type 528......

Damaged flange. Haven't inspected it inside.... I think this was a bad casting...but used....and later threw a rod. Initial inspection does not show flange breakage....but a poor casting...? IMO I did see a crack inside this case...have to open it up an take pics. Maybe tomorrow.

I lighted up the second pic and you can see the Crack inside the Case.....above the bottom left of the hole....

Very good info....Thanks again. Will try to some out tomorrow and see what fits.

And.....what is the "spigot?".........not familiar with what that refers to regarding engines....

The "spigot" is the part of the cylinder that fits into the case.

Hi James,

Did some more work on the 1300cc case.

Case over all looks good. Opened it up and no cracks. But there is evidence of a weld done on the Rear Bearing housing.....Looks like a good weld, made in a matching metal.....But will need to be Machined....

I was able to match up 3 jugs and 3 heads for this engine. One Jug has a crack in the spigot and a rather corroded inside portion.

Anyway....would like to know if you could help me identify if the Crank Shaft is correct.

The #s on the Crank are as follows:

0429562

546 11

764

Tomorrow will try to match up some connecting rods....have a bunch of em.

A few pics....

3-piece cases w/616/36 and 616/39 are late 1968/1969 912s.
In the box of brake drums, a couple of ribbed 356A drums and the 3-ribbed drums are 1960 T5B thru 1963 T6B
before the C disc brakes were introduced in late 1963 for the C series.
